Under $400 Parlor/0 Size Guitar Recommendation?
Looking for my son. Used would be fine. We tried a Recording King RPH-05, but I would like something a bit higher end. Anyone with experience in this price range?
Thanks, Bill |

If you are thinking of purchasing new, take a look at Elderly Instruments in Michigan. They have a line of guitars called the Farida Old Town series. The lowest priced model, the OT22, comes in at just a bit above $400. I just received mine yesterday, and you can read my review of it today on this site under the title "Farida OT22w review." There are also video clips of the OT22 on you tube and on the Elderly site. Technically, this is not a "parlor" guitar, but it is a small, very comfortable guitar that sounds good. You will have a very hard time finding a used one.

Love my Alvarez AP70 Parlor. It's little under $300 at Musicians Friend..
Great guitar and value .. IMO.. Not sure how old your son is.. but I loaned it to my college student son to play in his dorm room. I know it gets a lot of use.. comfortable to play and sounds great. |

Ibanez AVN9 Artwood Vintage, solid mahogany top, laminate mahogany back and sides, $399 at Amazon and other online sellers.
Very resonant, and the vintage finish makes it look like a 1930s instrument.

Plus one on the Alvarez parlor. I just picked up an AP70 from Musicians Friend and it’s great. I took my two daughters (9 and 11) to GC before Christmas as had them play a bunch of guitars, from Taylor to Breedlove, Yamaha and Alvarez. We all liked the Alvarez parlor best, both in tone and in feel. We are all really enjoying it.

Alvarez AP66SB. Solid hog top, laminate hog back and sides. Sunburst. Slot head. A 00 size though. 24" scale, 12 fret and 1.75 inch nut. Does not sound boxy at all. I have one. I like playing bluesy stuff on it. Mine didn't come with a case (Zzounds). My wife got me a tweed case for it.
Alvarez AP66SB Here's a sound clip and a picture of it next to one of its big brothers, lol.

I haven’t played any of the Recording King 05 series guitars but my RP06 rivals most $500 guitars I’ve played and has a 1.75” nut and finger style appropriate saddle spacing. That’s being said some of the Artwood Ibanez series, the Alvarez Blues/Delta guitars, and Gretsch roots collection are all solid for under $500 |

I have owned and really like both the Recording King RP-06 and all solid version RP-10
I also have owned and would recommend the Art & Lutherie Ami. Solid Cedar top and made in Canada. These have a slightly slimmer neck profile and nut width than the Recording King which might be more comfortable for a younger player. |

Faith gets some very good reviews for their all solid-wood parlors. Here's a mint used one on reverb (just a little above your budget).

While just a tad larger than classic single-0 - hands down - any AP-series spruce-topped Alvarez parlor. I've owned or played at least 6 or 8 of them.
Notes: the hog-topped ones have their appeal, but are not in the same tone league as the spruce models that punch way above their price range. 1.75" nut on slim neck with 24.2" scale. Good luck in your search! |

I really like the Teton parlor, and own the more deluxe STP-180DVB version. It is a nice little guitar, and shares play time with my various Taylor's. ~$500 street price.
https://tetonguitars.com/product/stp...-teton-guitar/ The more basic STP-103NT mahogany (probably sapele) version should be easily had within your budget. I saw it in a shop last year for $325. https://tetonguitars.com/product/stp...-teton-guitar/ |

Find a basic solid mango or acacia Pono used. It will smoke anything I've played including an Eastman.
I played a bunch of parlors when I was hunting for one and came to the conclusion the smaller the guitar, the better it needed to be to sound good. Also check out the Vintage Parlor Guitars website............
