LR Baggs Active Element Way too bassy
I've a 2015 Gibson Hummingbird MC with the OEM LR Baggs Active Element pickup in it. It is boomy and dull. It almost sounds as if I was playing a bass.
Is there a remediation here? Can a luthier balance the saddle better? Or should I have something else Installed? I love they way it sounds unplugged but plug it in and thud takes over. Or maybe just eq it. I figure eq-ing mud will sound like eq-d mud.

If it's dull and boomy, it may be an installation issue where the saddle isn't flat or isn't making good contact with the piezo.

Checking for an installation problem is always helpful, but I've always felt the Element's tone has been "pre-contoured" a bit on the bassy side. It was that way with the Element system which I personally tried, as well as a few that I've run sound for.
If it isn't an installation problem, you might try a six or seven band graphic EQ pedal to adjust the tone to your taste. If you choose to replace it with another undersaddle pickup, the DTAR Wavelength is a popular one, and you can adjust the EQ with two screws accessible through the preamp casing. The Pick-up The World (PUTW) I/O undersaddle pickup is the best undersaddle pickup which I've tried, but its pricey and some folks have complained of difficulty in contacting anyone at this small company. On the plus side, its about the same thickness as the Element. |

Checking the installation is absolutely right.
If that doesn't get you the sound you want then upgrading the Element to an Anthem SL is very easy and does not require drilling any new holes. I upgraded my J-45 that way and I like the plugged in sound way better. |
