Stefan Grossman's Guitars - back in the day??
Hi, when SG lived in the UK ,I used to see him in the folk clubs in and around London quite a lot.
Ihave a memory that heused to travel around with two Martin 12 fretters - a 00 and a 000 - And my "memory2 was that they were 40 type trims, but all the images I could find on Google show him with a large Euphonon (?) or Martin J models. Is it "false memory" syndrome or does anyone else remember seeing him with smaller guitars ?

Didn't he play one of the archtop conversions back then?

Martin made this Signature Model for him (an HJ-38). Nice guitar . . I bought one that became available on the used market a year or two ago.

I think he had a Stella and an OM45 in London in the late 60s

I saw him at the Cambridge Folk Festival, Andy (as did you too also ) when he hosted the guitar workshop, but I can't remember what he played on stage.
I do remember going along to a workshop which he hosted in Edinburgh a couple of years later, and he lent me his guitar, which I vaguely seem to remember was a Stella ... or similar. Definitely not a vintage Martin style guitar. |

He was a big advocate for the return of the OM and touted the benefits in some of his Kicking Mule notes. He was also an early adopter of Larson family instruments. Last I saw him was in Memphis with John Renbourn he was playing a Franklin OM, Renbourn had a Guild dreadnaught.

He played a Franklin OM built by Nick Kukick in addition to all the other instruments. I have one of his disks where he describes in detail all the guitars played on the recording.

Stash you're correct. Back in the pre-history days he played double and triple o's. Along with some other guitars that were larger. Even dreads. I've seen album covers and book covers with him playing the smaller guitars. I have one of those books still. He is the main reason I got into smaller guitars. I remember an interview with him where he discusses his old guitars. In the old days the Martin 45s were made with the best wood and with the most care. The prices were not so high back then. He also instilled a love for Larson guitars in me also. Later he moved to Franklin guitars. I ended up getting one of them as well at one point.

When I saw him in concert ca 1970, & he was playing a fancy OM sized Martin 14-fretter, & a Stella grand concert ( tailpiece model, 6 or 12 strings - he had both ) for slide - for confirmation, I guess you could always ask him on the Woodshed forum?

I even seem to remember that he said to me (was it him?) saying that back at the time he got them, no-one wanted small guitars so they were pretty cheap.

If you google his albums and look at the images you can see that he used them on the older recordings. I'm not skilled enough on posting them here.

Hey,
I was also at the workshop back in 1975, went to Cambridge FF just for the Guitar workshop to see Stefan and my hero Leo Kottke. Was right in the front with my kodak instamatic. Just looked at my "fuzzy" photo's and Stefan played his Euphonon and his 12 string Stella. Great workshop as Ric Schoenberg, Ton Van Bergeyk and Leo Wknkamp Jnr(sp) were mixing with everyone outside. Even bought my first Calton case from the Keith who had a stall for get this.....£35 as it had some scratches on. I took a template of my Fylde Prospero 12 string with me. Still have the receipt somewhere. |
