well I'm hoping the Bugera sounds better than the Katana. I played the Katana tonight and was not impressed at all with it's tone. I played the Gretsch 12 thru it and it sounded like plastic. I wasn't able to dial in a nice rich tone. I had plenty of volume available but kept it turned down low so as not to drown out the other musicians. It's funny because at home the Katana sounds fine and yes I can get a good tone from it. Maybe it was the acoustics of the room, but the acoustic guitars sounded fine to me, but my 12 string thru the Katana sounded blahhhh, on par with the VOX AC4TV.

So as things stand now, it's a race between the SFX, the Rosette or the Bugera.

The room does indeed have to do with the sound.

MM,

What Steve wrote makes sense. I haven’t had much time yet to experiment, but what little knob fiddling I have done leads me to believe that you have enough versatility to find what you want. Keep us posted.

Well I just talked to a friend who also has the same Bugera amp albeit an older version, and he says he loves it. He plays out with it a couple times a week and it has served him well for over a year now. So that was encouraging.

It would appear Bugera has got its quality under control, I bought the v22 and loved it and then bought the v5 for church so I didn't have to lug the 22 around, its great. Now for a economy amp these have been great for me.

I received my Bugera V22 today, I plugged in the 6 string Gretsch and was in Heaven. It sounded great clean from the get go, then I hit the overdrive button...sounded great again this time gritty.....The amp is bigger than I thought it would be, a little heavier than I thought, but it sure sounded good.

I had bought it as a used item, but they shipped me a brand new never open sealed unit. I'm happy.

Thanks for the recommendation.

So what do you now think about the Boss Katana 50 watt amp?

I think the Bugera sounds much better than the Katana. I haven't played them side by side yet, but the Bugera sounded so sweet and natural last night while I was jamming to Working Class Hero......I can't wait to try it out at the senior center....

MM, sounds as if you are as happy with it as I am. Enjoy.

Some suggestions/thoughts:
  • Play around with different combinations of OD gain/volume, master volume, and pentode/triode - you'll find a bunch of useful tones in there, even before you bring in the EQ...
  • It's definitely larger than what you'd expect for a 1x12" combo, but they're unabashedly borrowing a page from the '60s Ampeg/Mesa Boogie combo playbook here: bigger cab = bigger tone, and you seem to be as happy with the results as I am...
  • I own the first-gen "blue-light" version of the V22 (which requires a bias job when you change tubes), and the tech who showed me how to do it without killing myself (DO NOT try this without expert guidance - period) was so impressed with the construction quality - he couldn't believe that this was a $300 (in 2010) amp - that he was going to pick one up for himself. These babies are built like tanks: big transformers for their rated power, machine-screw/anchor fastening of all removable parts (I've seen boutique amps at four times the price - not to mention the big mass-market names - that don't do this), stable circuitry (same tech told me it's some of the best he's seen - this from a guy whose home system is built around McIntosh components), and it carries throughout the line - I also own a current-production V5 Infinium, and it weighs half again as much as comparable amps from other makers. Good stuff, and the more you use it - in a variety of settings - the more you'll appreciate it...

I'll assume you're going for clean tone/headroom here - my go-to settings are:
  • Pentode
  • Master between 8-10 (depending on the guitar's pickups)
  • Normal input
  • Clean channel volume becomes your Master - IME you won't need to crank it above 3, depending on the size of the room - and use the guitar's controls to regulate your overall volume
  • EQ/reverb depending on guitar/room (mine's set up as an all-purpose plug-&-play with the upgrade tubes/Swamp Thang - EQ at 12:00, 'verb as needed - YMMV)

Well, you bought one and I bought one. Sounds like the Bugera people owe Steve some commission money. They also owe him something for producing two happy customers.

That sounds like a good plan. I just ordered a V5 to go along with the V22.

I too am considering ordering a V5. I thought the V22 was going to be smaller. I love it though. I plan on doing the modifications Steve recommends. I think Santa Claus is going to bring me some vacuum tubes and a speaker.

The V5 will probably be better for my Sunroom Man Cave.
