Time to Change Strings
You know its time to change strings when you discover that the stinging sensation in your fretting fingers isn't coming from hours of practice.
It's because the windings on your bass strings have worn out & little sharp pieces are now stabbing your fretting fingers.

It was a first for me too.
I knew that the bass strings were pretty "polished" at several frets & they were due for replacement. The strings had been on my Cordoba GK guitar for about 6-7 weeks. I tend to put in about 1 1/2 - 2 hours of practice a day. Last night, I discovered little pointy pieces sticking up. Nothing major is size, but enough to make my fretting fingers feel it. Apparently, I had worn the winding thin enough for the winding to break.
