Default GDAE Tenor Guitar Tuning?

Has anyone tuned an Ibanez PFT2 tenor guitar to GDAE? I've been looking into it and it seems it might need heavier strings and possibly a new nut. When I tried to tune it there it just wasn't right.

John Pearse has a set strings recommended for Irish tuning on a Martin 23” scale tenor:

Depending on what you are playing, GDAE is ideal for melody lines, but as an accompanying chords instrument, I recommend trying GDAD (or CGAG) ... works well for me ...
