Default 2011 Mayes GC Pink Ivory - Healdsburg Show Guitar - PRICE DROP!!!

As listed on Reverb at : https://reverb.com/item/14910399-joh...ert-pink-ivory

Will sell for $5500.- PayPalled and Shipped for an off Reverb sale. Guitar is still available and now with a major price drop!!! Thanks for looking.

This is an exceptional 2011 John Mayes Grand Concert acoustic. Stunning woods and craftsmanship from renowned luthier John Mayes. Mayes apprenticed under Dana Bourgeois prior to starting out on his own, and at his peak built only a handful of custom guitars each year. John built this amazing guitar to show at the 2011 Healdsburg Guitar Festival. I am the first owner and guitar has been kept in pristine condition in a non-smoking home, rarely played.

This particular Mayes build combines one of the rarest woods, the Pink Ivory for the body with a superb figured Bearclaw Swiss spruce for soundboard along with the always phenomenal attention to quality and artistic value.

Specifications for Mayes #179 Pink Ivory
  • Solid Bearclaw Swiss spruce soundboard
  • Curly pink ivory back and sides
  • 1 Piece Honduran Mahogany neck
  • African Blackwood fretboard with purfling lines
  • African Blackwood headplate with pink ivory backplate
  • African Blackwood bridge
  • Metallic Schertler tuners with ebony buttons
  • African Blackwood binding
  • Blue Paua abalone rosette, with butterfly medallion inlay by Craig Lavin
  • Black/white/black top, back and side purfling
  • Bone nut and saddle
  • Bone bridge pins
  • Mayes Eureka! style bracing
  • Two way adjustable truss rod
  • High gloss finish
  • Custom Ameritage case
  • 25.5" scale
  • 1.75" nut width
  • 2.25" string spacing at saddle
  • 15.75" lower bout width

Here is a note about the medallion inlay by the artist who did it:
So here it is, a butterfly and flower scene out of about 60 pieces of 14K gold, black abalone heart, pink mussel shell, black pearl, green sea snail, purple acrylic, orange corian, blue corian, gold pearl, silver bezel, yellow canary stone, and green abalone in a turquoise background.
A little window along side the sound hole into nature..

Please see Reverb listing for many more photos. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for all your kind words and best wishes. Indeed it is an amazing guitar with an amazing presence. It will make someone very happy I'm sure.

@DiamondDave which one do you have? They were all amazing guitars. Would you happen to have a copy of the promo shot (photo) that John took all of them together? I know he sent it to me at some point but for the life of me I can't find it. If you have it and if you wouldn't mind sharing it with me I would really appreciate it. Thanks much!!!

Fun to see this one again. I remember it and the others well at Healdsburg. I truly hope John gets back to building guitars again soon!! He's to good of a builder to not be crafting fine instruments!! Good luck with your sale, I'm sure that is a killer sounding guitar.

Thanks @SuperB23. Indeed John is a master who needs to come back to the spotlight. All his work is impeccable and amazing sounding. I wish him all the best.

@DiamondDave thanks for letting me know. If I find it one day (group photos) I will send it to you. Keyhole guitar is beautiful. I remember it very well from the photos John was sharing on AGF at the time. It must sound amazing!!!

Here's a photo John had shared with me from build time. Does a good job in showing off the Bearclaw Spruce soundboard... Have a good weekend.

Once upon a time I owned that "keyhole" and still I regret letting it go. Thankfully I still have hung on to the third '11 Healdsburg guitar. The "black and white" with the peacock scrimshaw that John's mom's artistry has graced this piano in s guitar's body.

Your guitar is beautiful. I recall it from back in the day and here's a group shot that I stored from the build days. There was another guitar with the mmosaic medallion made in the same batch. Not sure if that was in the '11 show or not. Anyways, enjoy!

I have the mosaic guitar - a OO rather than the "Eureka" OM bodies you guys have. Picture below - and yes he took it to 2011 HGF.

Best of luck. I was able to visit John while he was building all the instruments for 2011. Great set of guitars. My OO is still the most playable and enjoyable of any guitar I've handled.

Phil

Eric Skye with the OO at HGF. The OMs are in the background with John standing at the table.

The Eureka models from the Healdaburg 2011 are Grand Concert. I had the "keyhole" which I traded away (mistake) and I still have the "black n white".

Too bad John's website and photo gallery went down. So many beautiful photos he had there. My shots don't do justice to the guitar. I wish I stored a copy of all those gorgeous photos...

This thread is making me regret having to do this...
