Default This Holiday Season, What are You Musically Grateful For?

I'll start:

1) My amazing wife, who was born with perfect pitch and can play any song you can hum. One glass of rum grog on Christmas Eve and she's good for about three hours of holiday tunes on the piano -- WITHOUT sheet music.

2) As always, the songs of John Prine.

How about you?

The "Eight Discernments," a collection of beginner pieces by Andrew York. Accessible and beautiful, yet less compositionally predictable than much introductory work.

The art form itself, I guess, and my own push to teach myself how to give something back to it.

The ability to easily record and make music with just a laptop and a mic.

Two things have equal weight:

I got my second (other) knee replacement a month ago and it's healing great. I can't wait to get back to some normalcy of mobility.

I accepted a job offer in Orlando yesterday. Instead of being the program expert for what I do, I'll be the company expert. (Same aerospace corporation, but different company.) I get to keep my CA salary, which is the equivalent of a 13% raise.

I am grateful for my songwriting group. We meet once a month (take summers off for travel) and really support one another in writing from the heart and sing songs that have both musical interest and meaningful lyrics.

Best,
Jayne

So, for about forty years I had a particularly challenging modern classical piece that was my favorite acoustic solo of all time. This song was way out of my reach.

Fast forward four decades and youtube tutorials and my intensely renewd love of guitar playing and this year I was able to learn and master this incredible piece.

I am grateful that *I* actually got to be able to play my favorite piece, which I never even dreamed of being capable of.

I was thinking about this earlier today. I am thankful for Mel Bay publications. How many self taught guitarists got there start with these books. I can't even remember the names of the specific books I used right now but before I started formal lessons I spent probably a year with a Mel Bay book and countless other books since then.

What a great bunch of diverse thoughts! I found something that resonated with me in each of your posts. I have so very much in life to be thankful for. Musically, I'll say I'm very thankful for my friends in the Mid-Columbia Traditional Arts and Music Association who have taught me so much over the years. I have really enjoyed the friendships and weekly jams.
