Gonna get a neck reset for about $350
I've got pre-surgery jitters. Is it gonna work? Is it gonna make things bad?
Includes new intonated bridge, all the fretboard and fret dressing work, new strings, etc. The old D18's sounding great. Loud, deep, ringing, all you want and expect from a vintage Martin. I'm banging out The Band's "The Weight" with its ninth-fret intro (thanks, PT) and Lyle Lovett's bluesy little "She's No Lady" and thinking, "is this gonna get better?" I hope so. Should I gift myself a new guitar while this one's in the hospital? Ms S wants to go over to Louisville today to do some gift-shopping, and heck, Wildwood Guitars is right there, with its million dollar inventory of high-dollar Martins, Gibsons, Froggy Bottoms, and more. I'll slip in and see what's going on.

You should definitely go buy a new guitar today, if you find one that likes you!
I wish your D18 the quickest possible recovery! |

SF, are you getting the neck reset due to issues, or just indicated by geometry? I'd be apprehensive too if it sounds and plays well.
OTOH, buying a new guitar from Wildwood is always a good idea. I just got their black Friday email...but I think I'll stay away. The last time I took the wife to Louisville for lunch I came home with an HD28V I hope the reset makes a good guitar even better for you!

If you have a top shelf tech doing the work, the reset should work like a charm!

Have you been to Wildwood before?
They have very little in the way of storefront. Know what you want to look at before you go and they'll go in to the warehouse and get it. Their storefront will take you by surprise if you haven't been there, very tiny, but with a huge warehouse next to it. |

Why are you getting a neck reset? Is there a problem with how the guitar feels / plays?

+1. Are you getting a neck reset because you need to adjust the action and can't or did someone just recommend you get it done? Sounds like you enjoy the tone of the guitar as it is now.

Around here the usual stand-in for guitars off at the repair shop is a Harmony Sovereign. Nice thing is you might just find yourself in not such an all-fire hurry to get the guitar back from the shop.

I have another guitar to play, plus the ukes, while this one is getting its chiropractic.
Reason for the thoughts about the neck reset are as I said. Looking for some action improvement. I might use Bryan Kimsey down in NM and sent him an email asking if I could deliver it rather than ship it. Don't know where he is in the state, but we've family in ABQ and could make a mini vacay out of the drive. When your saddle is down to the lowest limit but your action seems OK, mine's two dimes under the low E at the 12th, isn't it time for a reset on a 1972 D-18? Oh, and should I be playing lighter strings? I am using the Martin Lifespan bronze with .013 lightest. Everything I played when at Wildwood Guitars yesterday seemed to fret so much easier. Barred chords particularly.

Good choice on using Mr. Kimsey. Please let us know how it sounds after the work...and enjoy the Mexican food in ABQ!

I believe he's pretty far from ABQ....up in the north east part of the state.....middle of nowhere. Close to Colorado. |

Those early 70s D-18s really benefit from being worked over by Bryan Kimsey. He does a great job.
