Default The Top Straight on...

Bill sent me a straight on photo of the Carpathian Spruce top of the guitar, now that it is bound with Cocobolo. You can now get a sense of the proportions of this 16" body. The body purfling matches the simple line of the rosette intersecting the MOP triangle. The the oval soundhole is also bound in Cocobolo, but it is difficult to see against the shadow of the body's interior. I believe he is moving on to the peghead veneer and finishing the neck and fingerboard.

Default Peghead Veneer

Bill fabricated the peghead veneer today. This composite shot shows the fabrication process. The first shot shows shaping and pocketing the Cocobolo veneer. Next, a curly Honduran Mahogany inset is cut and inset. An Ebony triangle is pocketed, cut and inset. This will be the triangle's shadow. Lastly, the MOP triangle, logo and B/W/B purfling is cut and inset.

The veneer is also purfled underneath to match the fingerboard purfling.

The reiteration of the rosette design theme can be seen in this comparison shot.

Thanks Richard. If you like the peghead, wait until you see what is in store for the fingerboard...

Default Fingerboard (And now for something completely different...)

Bill had an idea for the fingerboard that was inspired by a concept that he saw Washington State luthier, Steve Andersen (http://www.andersenguitars.com/galle...gold-standard/) do some years back on one of his archtops, albeit slightly different in his implementation.

The upper portion of the fingerboard and binding is made from beautifully figured Cocobolo and the lower portion is made from Gaboon Ebony. The purfled gestural "arc" starts at the 17th fret on the high E side and meets the low E side at the 7th fret. It passes beneath the center line of the fingerboard beneath the 12th fret as a subtle position marker. He also installed B/W/B purfling beneath the fingerboard and "oval" shaped MOP side position markers in homage to the soundhole. The peghead will also get a Cocobolo backstrap veneer and the frets will be Jasco EVO fretwire.

Here is the fingerboard laid on top of the roughed neck placed onto the body. It will when complete be shifted down a bit towards the soundhole. In this shot, you can begin to see how the rosette, fingerboard and peghead veneer begin to gesturally work together. The finger rest will no doubt integrate with the design theme (tbd).

Thanks...

There are many decisions still to come...

- Finger Rest: Shape and woods
- Bridge & Saddle: Shape and choice of wood or bone
- Tailpiece: Shape, woods and body coupling
- Body finish: natural, tint or burst

Fantastic! Seeing that together it makes perfect sense.
As for tinting the body, do a similar swoop on the back. Darker on upper left, lighter on lower right.
Or not...

Steve

Thanks Steve...

The fiddleback figure in the mahogany is so beautiful on its own 1) leaving it au naturale is a great choice. Alternatively, 2) a slight classic reddish tint might bring out the figure and tie in the red hues of the Cocobolo binding and trim. Lastly, 3) perhaps some form of translucent burst or fade might show the wood and add some dimensional interest.

I think we will wait to see what it looks like complete in "white".

WOW!! This is really turning into a really cool guitar. The design concepts are well thought out and flow beautifully together!
