I doubt you will have to beg. Steve's been known to share his toys.

One of the reasons I apply my own finishes is that I don't like to relinquish control of the finish's film thickness to someone else's hands. OK, so I am admittedly a control freak in this area of guitar building. There are some very talented finish subcontractors doing great work so please don't read into this post that I am putting someone else's work down. I'm merely trying to outline my process for the readers.
I closely monitor the number of coats of finish I apply and then measure the final thickness to confirm my application process is on schedule. My final finish target thickness range is .0025" to .0045". You may be surprised to learn that many factory guitar finishes are >.010" thick. The thicker the finish the more the finish [could] impede top movement. Applying too much finish has an effect of tossing a blanket over your guitar. Try that sometime ;( I mentioned earlier that I use "Frisket Film" to mask off the bare wood below the bridge and fingerboard extension. The adhesive backed plastic film is a consistent .001" thick. So after I peel the film off, prior to gluing the bridge and fingerboard extension down, I measure the thickness of the finish and subtract .001" to tell me how thick the final finish is. On this particular guitar, the measurement is .004" and then I subtract .001" for the Friskit Film which leaves a remainder of .003" or the finish's final thickness measured at the fingerboard extension area. I repeat the same measurement process at the bridge but did not bother to duplicate that identical measurement in this post. For a reference analogy, the thickness of a sheet of notebook or printer paper measures .003" thick. This will give you a tactile example of how thick the finish is on this guitar. *** Disclaimer *** I'm not saying that I am right or the amount of finish others apply are wrong but I am merely showing the readers an example of our finish process and current ideals. Other builders may share similar ideals ... or not? |

Thanks for this description of your finish process. Very informative.

Personally, I use no grit at all. My wife will tell you, I'm already soft as a baby's bottom.

Far too much information, my friend! Plus, aren't all you Moderators unusually thick skinned?

FYI:
As most of you know ... McKnight guitars will not be in Memphis in June, 2017 due to the recent cancellation of the Memphis Guitar show. The show owners have our trusted respect that this was necessary on their end. In this case we do extend an invitation to those of you who would like to see a few McKnight guitars to attend the small shop event in north central Ohio called the McKnight McJam. It is our 10th anniversary. We have a wonderful time getting to know guitar players. You do not have to own a McKnight guitar or be an avid player to attend. I do limit the attendees to 50. We hope to see you then. Contact Mary if you are interested in joining us as pre-sign up is necessary.

After giving this some thought I think it best not to comment on our shower activities and to keep all of your wandering minds ... well ... wondering. Last edited by Tim McKnight; 12-12-2016 at 07:56 AM. |

Its time to prepare the neck for fretting. We chalk the fret board and sand it until the chalk is gone which tells me the neck is perfectly flat.
Each fret slot is beveled slightly using a 3 corner triangular file. This provides a gentle lead angle for the frets to enter into each slot: Finally we use a hooked blade tool to remove any sanding or glue debris from the fret slots: And now the fret board is prepped and ready to accept the fret wire. |

That's a beautiful fretboard. Is that ziricote? I also love those fretboard markers.
