John Havlicek, 1940-2019
We just lost one of the all-time greats.
Rest in peace, Hondo.

Oh man, that’s sad news. Loved watching that guy play. Almost always wanted the Celtics to lose, but loved watching them play anyway - they were the gold standard. And he was one of the greats, although they had so many of them!

Very sad indeed.
What a player. Such stamina, and he could play either as a guard or as a forward. He was great at both. And.....he stole the ball! Havlicek stole the ball! Anyone around these parts would know that to be a quote from old Johnny Most, the voice of the Celtics in that era. May they both meet up in Heaven court side.

I grew up in New England and loved to play and watch basketball. The Celtics were my team and Hondo was my favorite player. The guy is the all time leader in points on the best team in the history of professional basketball. Even more impressive than that, he is second in assists and 5th in rebounding, categories typically dominated by guards and centers, not forwards.
He wasn't even a starter for part of his career, basically inventing the role of the "sixth man." He was also a fantastic defender. His style of play paved the way for Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and others who may have been more dominant players, but none of them went 8-0 in the NBA finals! Grumpy old man alert: I haven't watched the NBA in years, it just isn't the game I remember. The athletes are a lot better now, but the quality of the game is a lot worse. Now get that basketball off my lawn!
