String Gauge?
I have decided to level and refret my relatively new Gibson L-00 (Keb Mo). I am the second owner. The fingerboard extension ramps slightly upward rather than downward making it impossible to complete a proper set up. Very annoying. Plus, I don't like the skinny flat fretwire Gibson used for this production run, and, I'm making a new unbleached bone nut and saddle while I got it on my shop bench. My question is about the factory spec'd string gauge of .11 - .52 (extra lights). I'd like to go with .12 - .56 gauge (lights). Anybody have experience with this string gauge change or think this could cause a structural issue?

I'm no authority, but I did have a Gibson Keb Mo for a while and went up to 12s on mine. I had 12s on it for several months before I traded the guitar away, and I didn't notice any adverse effects or major changes in geometry/setup with the higher gauge. It sounded better, too, to my ears. YMMV, of course.
Enjoy it! They are such neat guitars. edit: I just realized I didn't go up to .12-.56 as you're talking about. I used Elixir 80/20s, which are .12-.53, and Martin Retro Monels, which are .12-.54. (Both sounded much better than .11s.) Last edited by cmd612; 10-08-2017 at 07:10 PM. |
