Recommendation Nylon String Crossover
I'm looking for a recommendation for a nylon stringed acoustic with a "crossover," "fusion" or "non-traditional" neck. Specifically, I'm looking for one that doesn't have the traditional classical guitar neck--meaning, I'd like a smaller neck that more closely resembles a steel string.
I want to use it for bossa nova and my fingerstyle arrangements of jazz classics (i.e. Georgia, Fly Me to the Moon, etc). I certainly want this purchase to end up south of $1K and $750 would be a good target. Any recommendations? Advice? Thanks all! |

Look for a used Ovation Country Artist. Since the 80's, they have gone through three slight changes in design, so with patience, you can find the one whose looks best suit you. All of the necks play very nicely and the pre-amps sound good as well. Used ones fall well within your range normally.
Good luck.

There is a Cervantes Crossover I in the classifieds. These are very nice guitars and would suit the style of music you've talked about nicely.
It has a nice neck on it, a good compromise between a classical and steel string. The neck is 1 7/8 with a shallow C shape. I seem to remember the back of the neck being flat in the middle, good place to plant your thumb. My experience leads me to believe that 1 3/4 inch neck would be too narrow for nylon strings, they move around under your fingers. The downside is there are no fret markers on the neck of any kind. That takes a little while to get used to. Also, I believe it is a 12 fret to the body. That has both its pluses and minuses. If the Cervantes is too much, then I would suggest looking at a Cordoba. They are not as nice as the Cervantes but they are a good value for less money. The other one you might look at is Elderly's has a nylon string Martin (used) for sale. I think Toni (Play2PraiseHim) had a post about this guitar. good luck Jack

That Ovation looks nice. Was it Glenn Campbell that used to favor these? I played one years ago in a GC. I remeber that I liked it very much but it was too expensive for me at that time. I always wished they made a nylon Adamas with that pretty blueburst top, glittered deep bowl, & carved headstock & bridge.

Cordoba GK (Gypsy King) Studio. Excellent crossover with a loud, clear, punchy nylon tone and great electronics. Affordable.

You may want to take a look at the Schertler guitars. Although well known for their pickups and amplifiers, they have a line of guitars that use the same base design for both steel and nylon string. schertlerguitars.com
