I first heard him in an NPR story on Southeastern where he talked pretty openly about his drinking. He said, IIRC, that by the time the DBTs left the stage, he'd had a fifth of bourbon.

I can believe it.

Watching some old performances of Decoration Day, his voice is shot and he is slurring all over the place.

Glad he's in a good place now.

Just saw a video from recently when he sat in with the band, which was nice, and he was great last time I saw him live.

JI is one of the best of the current young songwriters in Americana music today. His songs have strong melodies behind simple messages with deep meanings. He credits his wife, Amanda Shires, with helping him toward sobriety. The rest of that story is that she is a great compliment to his performances. Alabama Pines is one of my favorites.
