Whiplash
Anyone see this movie?
I enjoyed the drama and the actors' performances but I couldn't help thinking that if it happened to me when I was a student, it would have ended with the teacher's nose or jaw broken. I watched it a second time with my 17 year old and he said the same thing. Still, an entertaining movie especially near the end. Just wondering what anyone else thought.

Whiplash
I loved the movie...great story and tremendous acting...especially JK Simmons. Perfect? No. Entertaining? Absolutely. As for how Simmons' character mentally and physically abuses the students...all too real. I played football for many years, and this type of abuse is common from cowardly coaches who couldn't play themselves and took it out on players. But...as a player or student, you either put up with it or quit.
Anyway...highly recommend the movie. Liked it much more than the schizophrenic Birdman movie. |

Yes,its a good movie. Not perfect but several cuts above most of them. It makes you think about the 2 main characters. The teacher was extraordinarily well played.

Yep. Buddy Rich ( but will always a relevant dinosaur)
Here's an excellent review of the movie by acclaimed drummer (now teacher at USC) from Weather Report: http://www.kcet.org/arts/artbound/co...lash-film.html Last edited by heni30; 03-15-2015 at 09:36 PM. |

Just watched this over the weekend and really enjoyed it. I thought the acting was superb.
I could not imagine in real life someone putting up with that kind abuse. |

I enjoyed the movie too. I was a bit disappointed in how it ended. I wanted it to end on a good note but JK Simmons remained evil to the end.

Just so Sandy isn't the "threadender", I'll chime in with my thoughts on the movie. I thought it was great, very entertaining.
It made me want to play some of my old Blue Notes, in fact I'll be doing that this weekend, can't beat those old blue note records, yeah I said it, records.

I really liked it, and especially the end. Miles Teller was here in KW a few weeks ago, went to HS with a guy I worked with and I saw a pic of them on FB and said "hey that looks like the guy from Whiplash."

I really enjoyed it too, and just saw it last week with my son who graduated from college two years ago and went through a very similar academic experience -- as a percussionist for an award-winning college jazz band (himself winning Outstanding Soloist awards two out of three years at Chicago's Elmhurst Jazz Festival, thank you very much!) and he liked it a lot too. I asked him if he'd ever seen a "teaching style" like that from any professor and he said no, not even close. The verbal abuse, I'd bet, does happen but the physical stuff, well, I can't imagine it would continue at all if it ever did happen. But who knows. And I loved the ending, and especially the major twist that sets up the ending... Anyway yes, excellent acting and some darn good drumming too, even if it wasn't Miles Teller playing!

I watched it and found it interesting, but not engaging. No character in the film came across as sympathetic to me. Too many inflated egos that were
lacking the self-confidence to act without fear. Don't find anything too enlightening about an abuse-revenge cycle. |
