"Secret" sale...?
This one appeared on my FB feed as part of the usual MF pop-up - can't find it anywhere on the regular site but it's a deal-and-a-half for anyone who's interested:

Those are cool guitars, and yes that linked price is very good.
Closest I ever played to that was a Hamer Slammer (inexpensive Asian made bolt-on neck LP Jr. type) which I put a Gibson P94 in the bridge of as a single pickup. It was loads of fun. It sort of got replaced with a Squire Tele Deluxe with two Duncan Designed P90s. But then, I always thought of the LP Jr design as Gibson's Telecaster.

A different name on the headstock, but how can they sell a guitar for the same that you might pay for the same it might cost to take your mate out for a nice dinner?

So much P90 pickup goodness in these links. After going though a journey of various single coil designs and humbuckers, I now sometimes think that a good P90 is the best overall sound of them all.*
*of course, there's also a reason they were replaced, the soapbars are also one of the most noise-prone designs of all time. Most home players today won't have a big problem with this, but picture yourself in a typical bar room gig in the 1950s with a couple of neon signs flickering and a big old red bathtub Coke vending machine by the side of the stage all lit by the light spill from the florescent tubes over the pool table. Still the sound of them can be glorious.

As a quick data point I have a Collings i30 with p90s. I pretty much exclusively use a wireless connection from the guitar. That does wonders from reducing the amount of noise picked up.

Another cool variation with the P90's screwed into the wood instead of floating in the pickguard...

I thought I was completely over playing electric and gifted my two custom Teles to friends. Then I happened to see a Youtube of the B&G Cedars of Lebanon guitar and shortly thereafter a buddy of mine handed me a brand new Seymour Duncan 59 pickup that he had bought years ago and had no use for. I then made up a similar guitar using the SD 59 and it turned out well. I do have to do a tear-down and apply finish once warmer weather gets here, but that hasn't kept me from playing it in the meantime... |
