which builder would you go to for a port orford top
plenty of builders are now for their ways with various top woods
but who would you got to for a port orford guitar? |

I had a Ziricote and Port Orford Cedar from James Goodall...it was a stunning guitar.

Howard Klepper likes to work with it.
Please don't call me. I hate the stuff. The smell alone makes me gag.

I've built a few and enjoyed them. They came out great. For practical purposes it's essentially just like Sitka spruce. Other than Goodall (and Howard now I see), I don't know of anyone who has made a habit of using it. There must be others though.

i, too, had a Goodall with a Port Orford top. it was the only guitar i've ever seen that used Primavera wood for the back/sides. it was a great guitar. my brother, who sold it to me, demanded it back after only a few months. he couldn't live without it. he still says its the best guitar he's ever owned (and he's owned dozens). fortunately, i still get to play it whenever i go visiting.

I have two guitars with a POC top. I love it! The Batson brothers have made more than few with it and they really know how to get a great tone from it...
My Batson... My Corban (Bill McLachlan)... Hope this helps... It's a very underestimated tonewood, imho. Kindly, Danny |

I like it and have had the pick of the best sets directly from the guy who supplies LMI.

I don't think I'd ever pick a builder on the basis of the type of wood I wanted in a top. Pick a builder based on a variety of other factors, then see if they can make your guitar with that material. If not, move the next one on your list of finalists.

I just got in a new guitar from Laurent Brondel which was a bit of a project! It is all American, ecologically sustainable woods- Port Orford Cedar top, back and sides and neck with black walnut for trim, bridge, fretboard and feature cutaway.
It really sounds wonderful and I hope someone doesn't buy it anytime soon! http://www.instrumentdatabase.com/go...model-b-3-can/ |

I agree. Obviously if you want a certain tonewood you would elimanate builders who don't use it, but good builders build great guitars with a variety of materials.

What makes this wood so unique? Is it hard to build with? How does the tone compare to Red Cedar?
