Default Beneteau

Can anyone comment on Beneteau Guitars? I have seen the name before but have not seen much about his builds, quality, tone etc.
TIA

I have played a friend’s and I thought it was a fine guitar, well built and with beautiful tone and clarity. But others have better experience than me. In particular, Dustin Furlow loves his Beneteau guitars and may chime in. In case he doesn’t, here are a few of his Beneteau build threads for you:

Hopefully this helps give you a flavour for the guitars.

Smile Mine was sweet

My first AGF deal was a swap with Alan for a Beneteau 000-12c

If not for the 1 13/16” nut on a medium depth neck I might still have it! KILLER axe.

Happy hunting and Thanksgiving too!

I have a Beneteau Baritone. European over Andaman Paduk, jumbo body, 28" scale. Fit and finish are excellent. It also has repairs done by the builder due to damage done by the original owner, Fingerstylist Don Ross, that are very clean and well done. Rosewoody tone, but unique, and still with very good string to string separation. It is easy for baritones to be a bit muddy and indistinct, but this one is not. I've also played a couple of Marc's standard 6 strings, OM size, I think. I would class Beneteaus in the upper echelon of solo builders.

Default Beneteau

I’m taking delivery of a pretty special Beneteau baritone shortly. Looking forward to posting details here soon, but in the mean time I’ll say that I own a concert standard made in 2013 that I love. That guitar lives next to some good ones from the likes of Taran, Kostal, and Greenfield and I enjoy it all the same. Glad to provide more personal insight if you like.

Marc builds excellent guitars and he’s been doing so for a really long time. I love them.

Canadian acoustic guitar phenom, Don Ross, plays Beneteau acoustics. Anything you hear of his (with exception of resonator style) is a great way to hear Marc's guitars.

Don has a few videos on his site that are well worth checking out.

I should also mention Don is a two time Winfield Finger style winner!

I am a huge Beneteau fan. I have two of his..a model M and an SJ. The workmanship is stellar and the tone is everything I want in a fingerstyle instrument.

Are you talking about the one at Down Home Guitars?

If so I played it about a month ago. It’s a nice guitar and they’ve had it for a while as I was curious about it. His guitars have nice clarity and note separation and this one is no different. But it’s very deep, it felt like it had near dread depth so it had a fair bit of overtones, but the notes are clear.

I have no affiliation with the shop, but their staff (Molly) was fantastic. She let me play about 20 boutique guitars and was patient, attentive, but gave me a lot of space, no pressure, etc. I was visiting Chicago, but it would be dangerous for my financial health if I lived nearby!

That is the one.
DHG is an awesome shop to deal with. Steve and Molly are awesome. I have had a couple of transactions there i.e. bought two guitars, one of which was my Huss and Dalton custom, there.
How is the Beneteau as a strummer? How is the condition?
Thanks.

Given the age, the condition was very good, it definitely did not look its age at all.

I strummed it a bit and it reminded me of the only Goodall I’ve played before. Reason I say that is that both guitars were clear but had a good amount of overtones. I will say for my ears, the overtones were a little more than I like for strumming, but I’ve got an ear for a more dry sound. Having said that, I can’t tell you how many times playing a guitar changes how I’ve thought about it, so there’s no substitution for playing.

Overall I liked the Beneteau and it stood out against other guitars. I flat out told her, if it wasn’t so deep, I would have seriously considered it. I remember liking the playability and neck on it as well.

There were two others I also liked in the rough same price range, a used Collings mahogany dread (it’s 2k cheaper) and a new custom Bourgeois 000 Country Boy (2k more). The Collings neck and fingerboard were very fast and totally it was very clear and bright, I loved that guitar!

The Bourgeois was one of the driest sounding guitars in their shop and personally I liked it more than guitars that were several thousands more (I probably played 20 total guitars).

Beneteau super fan checking in! I've had these 5 pass through my hands over the years...

2000 SJ longscale - Englemann/Padouk (ex-Don Ross)
2002 OM cutaway - Englemann/Black Walnut (my 1st)
2002 SJ Baritone - Englemann/Padouk (ex-Don Ross, hi Tony )
2015 M - Lutz/Brazilian
2018 SJ - Sitka/Padouk (1st commission with Marc)

...and as it happens I'm in discussions with Marc about a new build due in 2024 I can't speak highly enough about the man or his guitars. In my experience, they all have great fundamental response with strong bass and great clarity. All the ones I've handled have excelled in altered tunings. He's been building for going on 50 years now and takes great pride in doing everything by hand.
