I went looking for a Martin D-28 but bought a Gibson
Last week a friend of mine bought a new D-28 I have been playing it some and decided I needed one so today I went looking. I went to three local stores they had a few but none impressed me and finally went to Guitar Center. I was surprised Guitar Center had four D-28's and a D-18 in the store, so I sat down and played each one.None of them stood out to me so a tried a couple of Taylor's the Taylor's all sounded very bright not what I was looking for, so I got up leave and one of the clerks said we just got a Gibson J45 standard 2018 this morning if I wanted to try it. I said sure he handed it to me I struck a C chord and new it was my new guitar, sounded amazing compared to the others. The clerk was very helpful he sent me a $200 coupon on my phone and said if I could get a credit card from them they had a 24 month zero interest deal going, So I applied and was accepted for the card. So here is the new Gibson

Congratulations. I'm not going to get into the whole Martin vs. Gibson debate - I own one of each - but sometimes you can surprise yourself by preferring something that you didn't even go looking for.
Have fun with it. Wade Hampton Miller |

Congrats- however, what's the custom part? I know the J-45 "Custom" is rosewood.
Love to both builder's guitars, but the "we just got this J-45 in" (~); GC's are notorious for guitars with nasty strings- could the '45 just had the fresh set? Glad you didn't go "twinsies" on a Martin like your friend's guitar- you'll have a chance to hear the strengths of each of these iconic models. |

Awesome guitar! Also just a fine print with the GC card, if you miss a payment they charge interest on everything (even the paid months)

Martin and Gibson are both superb, iconic, pioneering guitar makers. You really couldn't go wrong whichever way you went. Of the Gibson, the J-45 Custom certainly is one of my favorites. Rosewood on a J-45 adds something special to the tone, especially in open tunings.

Congratulations!
Can't go wrong with a Gibson built in Montana.

Congrats!
I own too many Martins, as well as Gibbies. Question... that doesn’t look like a Custom. I see your headstock has Rotomatics, which makes me think it’s a standard with mahogany back and sides. Of course it doesn’t matter... as long as you like the sound... all mine are mahogany b/s so I get it.

Awesome. I'm a Martin guy too, but often - and I mean almost EVERY time - I hear 'that' beautiful finger-picking sound, that person is playing a J45. Congrats

Same thing happened to me-I thought I was getting a D-28 and they had 3 J-45's and I wanted to compare the two makers just for the heck of it. One of the 45's just stood out and I was "forced" into getting it. And I,too, have no problem w/Martins-great guitars. "They" are right when "they" say that you know when you hear "the one."

Nobody's but your opinion matters.
I own a D-28 but played a Gibson and was amazed by how light it was. Best of luck . . . enjoy.
