We built the guitar inspired by Tom Thomson as a group build. Before we started it was decided that I'd design the peghead and make it an "empty canoe" theme as a reference to the painter's mysterious death on Canoe Lake. I came up with the shape and decided to wood burn the canoe. The earthy tones of the peghead and box wouldn't have blended with the fingerboard inlay that Grit did, if not for the great watercolour work of Linda Manzer, making a nice transition between the two distinctly different styles. I took some shots as I burned the canoe, then Linda took photos as she did her colour work ... and I blended them into this little one minute time lapse video, just for fun!

The video really shows how this headstock came to life! Fantastic job with the wood burning and the coloring!
Incredible work as always, David and Linda.

Here's the back of the guitar ... continuing the cedar strip canoe theme. Sergei de Jonge not only did the back in cedar strips, but did (tapered, to match the side taper) the sides as well ... a TON of intricate work! .

Truly inspirational! Such talent. Years from now will be a group of artists painting tributes to the Group of Seven Luthiers!

As part of my research into artist Franklin Carmichael's life, three of us took the trek up north to Grace Lake, the site of one of the only photos of the artist at work. Believe me, it was an adventure to say the least, but we found the actual rock he sat on. At the time of the trip, I still had no idea what guitar I would make to pay tribute to this man and was just looking to soak up as much as I could before the creative process began.

Well ... today's the day of the opening of this show ... after three years of planning and hard work ... should be a blast! I saw a bit of the documentary yesterday and it's pretty cool. The Riddle Films people do amazing work! A heads up to anyone coming up this afternoon ... the gallery has parking for 500 but has arranged for overflow parking at a nearby school, so don't arrive too much past 1:30 or you might have a bit of a hike! .

I have been following this all along and meaning to respond but I recently moved to Bremerton, WA and am crazy busy setting up shop. But, this is so ridiculously awesome. I have such great respect and admiration for the entire custom guitar builder's community and this group is no exception. I would so love to get to view this collection.
Until then, wow, I just want to wish these 7 all the best and hope this project has brought great blessing to all involved, what a gift to the rest of us. When I see something like this I can easily think, 'what am I doing attempting to build my own guitars and enter this world of such elite luthiers?' It's the same sort of thing I get when I see Phil Keaggy playing, its like, why do I play? but hey, Phill himself said you'll always find a better player, don't let that get in your way, he said we all need to embrace what we love to do. if all you can play is a 'C' chord, but you love it, then play it with your whole heart. (not a direct quote but the message is there) To all of us who share this passion of lutherie: I believe we all have our own 'fingerprint',as it were, that makes up a wonderful pallet of luthiers, each with unique and important contributions. I am ultimately inspired by this project and hope we all get juiced up to get out in the shop and do what we're made to do. I believe it matters. Have a great weekend everyone!
