Default Focusrite Scarlett gen 2 / Reaper latency

Rank beginner here. I'm trying to add a track to a couple that are recorded and can not figure out how to eliminate the annoying delay on the new track. I understand this is latency, what I don't understand is how to fix it.

Does your interface have a direct monitoring button? That would alleviate much of the latency. I have a Steinberg UR242 and use Reaper and have not had any latency problems.

Had a lengthy session with Focusrite support on this and a couple of setup issues. Remarkably what seemed to solve the problem was plugging into a different USB port on my PC. Whouldathunkit.

Interesting I would not have thought that would be it. It sounds as if that port was somehow going through some app or processing before going to the sound card but that doesn't really make much sense.
For future reference
I don't use Reaper but one would think it would have some kind of input monitoring selection

Unless you are trying to monitor a track with FX on it, its always best to use Direct Monitoring. You didn't mention which model you have, on the 2i2, there's an on/off button on the front panel.

On my new (factory reconditioned) HP - which I don't use for recording, the front panel USB connectors are noticeably slower than the rear ones, measured when I was transferring files from a portable USB drive.

Could be a USB 2 vs 3 thing going on. USB 3 sockets usually have a blue plastic color inside. USB 2 are usually black or white. USB 3 is faster but your audio interface is probably USB 2 and sometimes this causes problems.

Also the "problem" USB socket may be sharing resources with your keyboard and mouse, for example.
