Default Me and Harvey Reid- Deering 6 string open back

Bought a Deering open back Boston on EBay several years ago. Emailed Deering and they they made about 8 of them. Harvey looks to be playing one? He seems to play it better than me. Lol

Here is him on UTube:

I like the upgraded inlays - I've got a '92 D-6 that looks plain by comparison...

The inlays do dress it up, just a great banjo really. Well if it's good enough for Harvey. I looked again today and they do have a open back 6 in their Vega line, totally different sound compared to the resonator

I own a Deering B6 guitar-banjo. It's from the mid- to late-90's sometime; I got it in a trade, so I don't know the year.

Anyway, it's a superb instrument. Guitar-banjos have always suffered from a lot of intonation problems, but Greg Deering figured out how to fix those, and as a result has been producing the best guitar-banjos ever made. The Gold Tone guitar-banjos are starting to approach a similar level, but it was Greg Deering who showed them and the rest of us the way.

You guys keep this up and I going to have to consider simmering down my poking fun at banjos and those that wield them!

Can someone describe for this non-banjoer the difference in tone between an open back and a resonator?

That's a great question. Not sure the resonator changes the sound as much as focusing it forward and making the banjo heavier. The difference in sound comes more from what the rim is made of. In the Deering Boston 6 open back the rim is maple. On the standard resonating B6 the rim is metal. Thus the sound of the open back is more a folk mellow sound as opposed to a sharper clearer blue grass sound. I think most open back have wood rims but can have metal tone rings that move the sound to a clearer cleaner tone? Uptube bluegrass vs folk open back banjos. Blue grassers go for a much more penetrating sound, often use metal finger picks. Harvey is a great example of the opposite.

More blue grass sound:
