Thanks for the information. Maybe I should look for a tube radio.

Quite frankly, the Russian/Chinese stuff that was being offered then was crap (still is in some cases, particularly the MIC OEM tubes you find in many - if not most - low- to mid-price tube amps these days); fortunately, there's been a good deal of progress in terms of both availability and construction. One little secret among tube junkies is that, just as we here in the US have the military-surplus JAN tubes (the ones that the hard-core Fender guys would sell their gonads to get - and not without good reason), there's a whole batch of pre-Glasnost Soviet mil-spec tubes that have been finding their way here for the last decade or so - and these come a whole lot cheaper; another is that Shuguang (China's largest manufacturer) produces tubes at three different quality levels, the highest of which are fully competitive with many of the best vintage tubes according to reviews (and my own experience with some of their 12AX7's). Finally, the Russians have been developing a line of KT-Series uber-tubes - KT-90, KT-120, KT-150 - that have been enthusiastically embraced by the audiophile world; FYI the KT-150 (an all-new design resembling nothing else past or present) is claimed to be capable of producing 300 watts from a single pair in class-AB (we're talking SVT territory here, folks) - I'm just waiting for someone to design the ultimate bass combo around a set of these puppies and a 15" neodymium speaker...

Did the OP mention what type of amp and what tubes they are changing?

No, he didn't, but it's a Marshall DSL15 and the tubes are ECC83 pre amp.

Preamp tubes are very easy to swap out. Just make sure the amp is off and be careful not to bend the pins. I probably would take it to a tech though if you aren't experienced with tubes. Even swapping out preamp tubes requires a bit of understanding.
