Congratulations! The Amicus is a machine. I use 8-38 slinkies and tune down to A or G.
The recommended or design tuning of D with those heavy 9-42s (X2) is far too much tension for me. I also had the nuts and saddles on both my Emeralds replaced with bone by forum sponsor Brian Howard http://www.brianhowardguitars.com He included some bone shims to adjust the action. Great guy! |

As a point of information, my X20-12 came wearing heavy gauge (54-12) EJ-37 strings from the Emerald factory -- 336 pounds total tension according to the package. Putting EJ-38 (47-10, 250 pounds tension) on it made it much more playable. These things are strong!! The heavier strings worked great tuned down to C# instead of standard E-e.
Maybe I lost a little tone and volume, but the heavier strings were a real handful to play for anything other than cowboy chords, especially on a twelve string guitar. |

Did the bone make a noticeable difference in sound?

It may have. I sent them off to be setup by a pro and bone seemed a good choice.

I’m thinking about putting heavier gauge strings on it and lowering tuning all the way down to E. Has anyone done this?

Sean said that won’t do.
