Funny thing, I never learned this song until I saw that it was a GC (or others) specialty. I had never heard anyone play it. I have big hands so I learned the stretch version and it is relatively easy to play and sounds good. Playing and singing it is a little tougher. I don't play it out much, don't want the look coming from my fellow guitar testers....

It's about the fifth song my teacher taught me and it's a great way to develop "the stretch". Still working on getting down the full progression of the song even though I know all the parts quite well by now, but it's fun to work on.

It should be: E |-----------------------------------|| B |---1-----1-----1---0-0-------------|| G |-------0-----0-----0-0-------------|| D |---0-------0-----------------------|| A |-----------------------------------|| E |-------------------3-3-------------||

Blackbird was also done by Kenny Rankin...even Paul McCartney thought it was better than he did it himself (I don't quite agree, but it's worth a listen). It was done on an album called "Silver Morning", which isn't on CD, for some strange reason...however, Kenny did the song on other releases...great jazz voice, and the guitar was pretty good, too.
I finally learned it this year, after having the Hal Lenard Easy version for many years...I think it's the correct way, because it was the only song in the so-called easy book that I couldn't play---it was such a rush to finally get it!!! (Now, if I could only do it at tempo!!)

I've looked at the tab versions on this thread and they're also wrong in a few places - if you're trying to do the "recorded" version. I don't know how to attach a tab here. If I did, I'd be more than happy to send it out. Can anyone help me out? Thanks! |

Well, now I have no excuse. If I want to consider myself an acoustic guitarist I'd better learn this.
How cool would it be to write a song that would become "the" standard for acoustic guitarists? When I think of acoustic guitar, I think of Blackbird and Tears in Heaven.

CSN
I've also played that one on and off for 30 years. My favorite version is still the original by Paul but CSN's is fantastic. Great harmonies and then you can hear Crosby just walk out of the studio at the end like he couldn't care less. I think Crosby and Stills spent half their time hassling each other back then. Well worth a listen ... it's on their box set.

If that was back in the bad old days, the Cros was probably keen to get back to his peace pipe

I've seen a lot of versions of Blackbird. TheStugots has it real close - just a few mistakes. Now, here's the correct "recorded" version....
