Default CA GX -- pretty sweet!

Played a Composite Acoustics last week -- a GX narrow neck -- and reeeeally liked it. The local dealer had a killer price on it too; I took it home for a day and loved it, for the most part, but just couldn't see, unfortunately, going with the narrow neck. I also thought the action on it could have been lowered just a tad for my taste. I guess the only way to do that is to have the saddle shaved down a bit. Now I see that the GX wider-neck model is apparently a pretty rare bird and it might take months for them to get more in. And, I doubt, at that same price too... I also notice that the CA website's "dealer locator" page doesn't seem to work!

By the way, the serial number on it didn't match any interpretation that I've seen anywhere, and although I was sure that it suggested that the guitar was made in 2010, the dealer said they just got it in a few months ago. I can't imagine why a guitar would take 18 months or more to get to a dealer, but maybe I wasn't reading it properly. Oh well; it wasn't a keeper anyway.

If you want the wider neck you may want to look at the used market, most all the prePeavey guitars will have the wide neck. There is a GXI over on the Carbon Guitar Forum right now in the selling area. Has the tobacco burst which they don't make anymore.

That would be a great idea (and thanks for the tip) but I'm done done done buying guitars anymore that I haven't been able to play first. Especially at that price range.

The only pre-Peavey models with narrow necks were made at the original CA factory, which closed in 2005. When they opened the new factory in 2006, all models got the wider neck. I'm not sure when the GX was introduced, but I'm pretty darn sure it was after they moved into the new factory. So, all pre-Peavey GX models should have the wider neck.

Yes no GX or GXI models were made at the old factory so all pre Peavey will have wide necks. I hear you on used guitars you can't play but on Carbon guitars you may want to think about it, carbon does not vary like wood and it is harder to screw up. If you like a GX chances are they are all very similar. just make sure by asking for measurements that the action is ok. I bought two Carbons used and had no issues. Just a thought especially if you are on a budget.

I have a pre-peavey GX with, I guess, the wider neck. I've never played one with the narrow neck, I'm curious how different it feels. You can play mine in Park City!

I never could get used to the CA wide necks, though many like them. It is 1 3/4 at the nut and widens noticeable as you go up the neck. Never felt like home to me. I may like the new neck, in fact may have played it on the new OX? Steve

Steve,

Can you compare the width, from the nut and as you go up the neck to the 12th fret, between: (1) a CA neck you reference as the "CA wide necks"; (2) your RainSong with N2 neck; and (3) the 6 string neck on your Emerald 12/6 doubleneck.

Regards,
Jim K

I can help you with the CA and the Rainsong Jim.

The original pre-Peavey CA neck is 1-3/4" wide at the nut and the width of the neck is 2-1/4" at the 12th fret whereas the Rainsong N2 neck is 1-3/4" at the nut and the neck width is 2-3/16" at the 12th fret.

String spacing at the saddle is the same for both, which is 2-1/4".

Thanks Ted, I can chime in on the Emerald Double.

6 string 1 3/4. To. 2 3/16

12 string. 1 7/8. To. 2 5/16

I think Alistair is in metric so above is as close as I can eye ball it. Emerald is much rounder like the Rainsong as opposed to the CA which I found sharper on the edges. Emerald is a bit thinner than the Rainsong N2. Steve
