I've allways heard USB has latency issues. How in the world can you record effectively with "any" latency issues. If I understand what latency is....you're not hearing or recording in sync. I'm sure this is a broad question, and I should probably be on a tech forum somewhere with it. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Seems to me, perhaps, the best way to utilize the H4 would be to record in the unit...then dump into the Cubase software for mixing. No?

Unless perhaps they are on the order of a few milliseconds......

Thanks for the links, and I'm always wanting to stay up to date with updates etc. Good to know where to find it.

Have you tried doing this? If you have, could you kindly post another test?

And also, could the Zoom H4 condenser mics work simultaneously with another condenser plugged in or do they simply get overridden?

Would appreciate your thoughts on this! Thanks
Thanks for commenting on the music, guys.

Mismo, no, I have not tried external mics, yet. I believe Larry did. I thought he had mentioned that the internal mics would be disabled automatically.

a-coustica, thanks...it's nice to know that somebody is watching over me.

sluggo, I do have latency issues when communicating with my wife lately, at least, she thinks so.

I'm hopeful that a firmware update may make it possible to use both at the same time so you could get a wide stereo field.

Although it might not work that well -- mostly wishful thinking on my part....

Zoom H4 can only record two channels at a time. So at best you could use one of the built-in condensors (which would be pointed sort of funny) plus one channel of the microphone inputs. Doesn't sound likely for something they'd add to the firmware.

Hi guys...
This is not a firmware issue, it's a preamp issue. User selects either internal mics or external inputs. The signal is diverted one way or the other. There would have to be 4 preamps in the unit to use both sets at once. And there is no apparent way to use one internal mic and one external input. It's one or the other.

You can control the input level of the external inputs individually at the same three levels as the internal mics - L/M/H

If a person wants a more elaborate unit, you must probably buy either a standalone 4 track dedicated recorder, or a firewire unit with 4 or 8 inputs.

re: firmware for simultaneous internal and external mics:

I knew it was too good to be true. Thanks for the explanations.

I have often looked at the small units such as Tascam or Fostex units with 8 inputs etc. with a similar price. Aside from portability, what would be the tradeoffs with the Zoom vs. a unit like that?

Hi ITA...
The portability is the whole difference.

Pros of H4:
- Less switches and no faders to get dirty and/or break.
- XLR and 1/4'' combo inputs with 2 levels of phantom power.
- It can serve as a computer interface
- Comes with recording software
- Total battery operation including phantom power
- Mount it on a tripod
- Zero to recording in about 10 seconds (no power to recording)
- 4 levels of recording (adjustable mp3, 44.1khz wav, 44khz wav, 96/24 wav)
- Weighs under 8 ounces and fits in a pocket of my Dockers
- No moving parts to make noise (record to SD card)...important with internal mics
- Fixed X/Y stereo mics

Cons of H4 over stand alone:
- No sliders to mix sound
- Smaller screen
- Can only use two channels at a time
- more fragile

thanks a lot.

(i remember what you said..."haven't played my electrics for a while now"... PLEASE TRY!!!)

Right of hand, I think it should work with external mics. I don't think the internal mics, being that there in close proximity to each other, would give good results, but I'm just guessing here. When I'll have chance, I'll do some electric guitar recording (I'll need definitely new strings first ).

WOW.....i found a "high-end H4" on the internet (musician website)
http://www.nagraaudio.com/pro/pages/products_ares_m.php

Not a multi-tracks recorder but the 1go built-in memory is interesting.People are using the words "high-end microphone" talking about the Ares M on several forums.
Designed first for radio applications as they say on the website , people use it for instrument recording too =>

A post with sample from an owner playing.....accordion!!!

.........................................1150 usd......do we really need it?

Hi A-C...
Thanks for the link...I had not seen that one yet.

There are probably several more small field recorders in development. I'm sure they will all vary in features.

Right now in the handheld group I know of the Sony ($1850), Edirol ($400) and Zoom ($300) - well and the Ares M ($1000).

Actually the Ares and Sony have been out for a while, and the Edirol 09 is the second generation of the 01 model. There is bound to be some leap frogging and borrowing of features and idea as developers improve the units too.

And in the end - we the users win...quality generally goes up and prices come down.
