Default March/April AGF Showcase: Gordon Lightfoot Songs

Quote:
Would anyone be interested in a showcase of talent each month in the "Show and Tell" section, with a drawing at the end of each month for a donated gift card, etc.? The showcase would focus on the music of a specific person (i.e., Gordon Lightfoot, Elvis, The Who, or whoever we want) and people would post a video playing a song by that person or group (either written by them or performed by them). There would be no competition and this would be for fun only. The gift card would be donated (no money taken from AGF) and the prize would be drawn from among the entries. Any style would be welcomed, from finger picking, to flat picking, to strumming, and anything in between. You could take a song and make it bluesy or jazzy, or country, or bluegrass, or whatever.

For this month we will focus on the music of Gordon Lightfoot. Please post a video of yourself playing a song either written by or performed by Gordon Lightfoot. It can be any of his songs, and you can play the song in any way you want, with singing or without. You may use accompaniment, but the acoustic guitar should be featured. At the end of the month we will draw for a $50 gift card from ....., from among the entries. This is for fun only and not a competition. Have fun and lets see some great videos!!!

Thanks Todd. Let's give it a go. I'll put up the first song (well, I sort of cheated....there's a bit of Dylan at the end):

Great job on that song. I don't have any GLF songs I do. Maybe will have to learn one. Thanks for sharing.

Forgot completely that I play another GL song:

He has written so many beautiful songs. Wish I could sing.....

Now since I'm funding the prize, if no one else puts in a song can I award the prize to myself and go on a shopping spree for strings and the like?

I really do look forward to hearing more AGF versions of Lightfoot's songs.

Wow, that was lovely Ukejon...

Ok, Ok, I guess now I have to play. Here's a live version of If You Could Read My Mind.

I'm playing the fingerpicky guitar and my buddy Chris is playing the strummy guitar and singing.

Uke & Cobby...dudes you both played such different yet unique and beautiful renditions of this song. Both were so enjoyable to listen to. Uke your guitar sounds so pretty and Cobby the vox have such a nice timbre and character to them. Great job to both!

Hi, enjoying the renditions very much, thanks.

The 3 of us like to try do some of the lesser known Gord songs.

Hope you enjoy this one from the Sundown album:

Thanks guys! It should be noted though - as I said in the fine print of the original post - that I was just the lowly guitar player on that one. My friend Chris did the singing.

Chris is my solution to the "I wish I could sing" dilemma - namely, find someone who *can* sing to play with.

As far as the "I wish I could sing" part - I'm working on it, and I'm getting better... but progress is slow. I'm beginning to think that this project might take a while.

those are kind comments and Brian (the wonderful singer - modest!) will appreciate - I did the keyboards for that number from Canada and sent to the boys in California to synch up - have done others and are working on another

all Lightfoot - I play guitar but not at the level you forum folks do - here is another one you might like that was also assembled (A/V) by Bob Woolcock

Another great video. You all sure have GL nailed down perfectly.

Here is a bit more inspiration from the master (I just love YouTube):

yeah, ukejohn… that clip is classic and too bad the host introduced Rick as Nick Haynes, lol

this one is even more classic, IMO, only cos it's a year earlier and even more rare because we haven't had CBC release the entire video BUT also because it's got the late John Stockfish on bass

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1mHyn3MpkA

BTW, two of the guitarists that are in the Lightfoot tribute band I'm in, were taught by the late, Red Shea

here is some footage years after he left the Gord act

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RerYLXO4Gu4

the famous 1971 BBC live video doesn't show hardly any of Red's lead work, AGH

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqS310cQ0CI

can't sit here posting great youtube links all day, eh, ukejohn, lol …cheers Jim
