Dude, Stairway to Heaven was a cliche in 1972.

I've played Blackbird (my own weird version) for many years. Great tune.

It's a great guitar piece. It's also extremely easy to overplay. If you watch the new DVD of the Paul McCartney tour across America you can't help but notice how simply he plays it. He uses his thumb and one finger. Most people try to fingerpick it using all their fingers. It is just not necessary.

I play it. There's a sign in Buffalo Bros. indicating it is forbidden to play it there, unless you are Paul McCartney!

Ooops. I did not see that sign. They must think I'm Paul.

Yeah, it's a great piece and I'm guilty of playing it - a lot!

Paul's easier version is different from the recorded version. I have the big, white Hal Leonard book of the Beatles' Complete Scores of every song they ever recorded and I know that you can't play Blackbird with just thumb & finger. In fact, there are a lot of songs in the book that will "shock" people on how some of the Beatles' stuff is actually played. I've seen too many tabs of Beatles' stuff that's completely wrong (wrong tunings, wrong part of the fretbaoard, the use of capos in songs, etc.). I was really surprised at how they actually played & recorded some of their songs. Their musical diversity, talent, imagination, and creativity will really be appreciated many years from now.

It's mind boggling how many songs they recorded in their career. The book takes up over 1100 pages of complete scores of every song they ever recorded! That includes drum parts, brass arrangements, string parts, etc!

Sorry for the wordiness! Just had to get that out.

BTW - I'm guilty of playing Stairway, too. I've been playing for 2 years and it's easy enough to play for someone like me with a limited amount of playing experience. I have the "recorded version" in tabs and it's not all that difficult. I can even play the solo (honest), and Page uses a "clean" Telecaster thru a Marshall combo for that. The ending "heavy" riff is actually an acoustic guitar "clean". Too many cover bands think it's a Les Paul with a lot of distortion, but if you listen very carefully.... Page also layered a lot of guitar parts in the studio, which made performing some of their stuff live very difficult for them to do. At times, they sounded "thin". They really needed 2 or 3 guitar players in concert to do their stuff justice.

Wow..........time to stop!

James,

As a relatively new guitarist, I'd be interested in knowing more about this tuning - can you supply details/links ?.

Many thanks,

Andy.

PS - I can't play this yet ! ........

I learned Blackbird a long time ago and it’s one of my favorite Beatles songs to play, but I never play it in music stores or stairway to heaven for that matter.

Music store virtuosos bug me.

I've never heard anyone play it in a music store. Then again, I don't get around much. Sounds like a good tune to work on..

Thumbs up Ditto...

I learned it earlier this year, so I play it a lot as well.

I think it's a very good song for testing guitars because you have to play up and down the fretboard. Try playing it on a beater with lousy action around frets 10-11-12, and you'll see what I mean.

And definitely get the original sheet music/TAB.

What about Dust in the Wind? Actually, that is the first fingerstyle song I ever learned. Of course, when I go to music stores I never play Blackbird, Stairway or Dust in the Wind. Usually I either play some classical tune or Meadow Rag by Steve Howe. My problem is that a lot of the fingerstyle tunes I know are in altered tunings, and most music stores would probably not like the guitars being retuned too much.

I think, though, that I will hunt down the music to Blackbird to make sure I'm playing it right, or at least close enough for gov't work.
