Default All Ferrari Front Row in Russia

Finally, someone challenges Mercedes dominance of qualifying with Ferrari taking 1 and 2 in qualifying, and by a decent margin.

Uncharacteristic long faces on Wolf and Lauda in the AMG-Mercedes pit. Bottas out qualifies Hamilton to get 3rd, not sure Hamilton wanted a teammate quite THAT good.

Not sure if I so much want Ferrari to win as for Mercedes to lose. You know what they say about Mercedes and porcupines.

Yea, I had spotty coverage due to a storm and DISH, but I guess the Ferrari's are finally dialed in. Can't wait for the first corner tomorrow morning.

So, I deleted my r/formula 1 feed on Reddit so I wouldn't get any spoilers, and here they are on the guitar forum.

We don't get qualifying here in the Midwest till 5pm.

I'm in the Chicago metro area and Comcast had it live at 7AM.

The last Ferrari front row was in 2008!

Did anybody catch some of the helicopter coverage. I guess the rules are different in Russia. The helicopter has a nose mounted camera and he would wait at the end of the front straight for a car. Then drop the nose at follow. He was below the tops of the light poles on several of his flights. That takes some flying skill and daring.

Hi, I watched it live on Sky. An exciting qualifying - and a challenging track with three (?) 90 degree turns!

I saw that helicopter swaying around too - did seem a tad reckless, but what do I know.

Sochi looks pretty cool!

I don't have any great attachment to any team or drivers, although I'd like to see The two Redbull drivers breaking up the Reds and Silvers a bit ...... and I do have a bit of a "thing" for Clare Williams.

I follow F1, a bit, as I'm intrigued by the international and "builder" aspects of it. Question for you more knowledgeable folks: Why is (American) team Haas relegated to the middle of the pack, if they have a Ferrari power unit? Are there different versions of the engine/ERS and Haas' is inferior to some of the others?

They're not relegated to the middle of the pack, that's simply where they qualified.
Not as fast as the front runners and not as slow as the back markers.
You can bet they're working to improve their position.

F1 can be about tiny little improvements over time.
Bottas just won his 1st Grand Prix - it took him 81 starts.
There are F1 drivers that didn't win any Grand Prix in their career.

Stirling Moss was a great driver who did win races but never won the championship.
Sir Jack Brabham won it 3 times and is the only one to do it in a car he built himself.

It's all about the whole package working, not just engines.
Teams usually have their own chassis, gearboxes, brakes, engine management systems and suspension.

For some years now the Renault powered Red Bull team have been quicker and more successful than the Renault factory team.

Actually, Haas has done spectacularly well for only having two seasons. When you watch a race, sometimes they will post top speeds through speed traps at the end of long straights. The winning teams are seldom posting top times as they balance speed, drag, and downforce so the car is good in turns as well as straight line speed.

When they show in-car footage, notice the difference between Mercedes and Ferrari and say, Force India. The Force India drivers will sawing back and force with the steering wheel, constantly making corrections. The Mercedes and Ferrari drivers will appear to be smoothly gliding along with little correction needed.

Several teams will contract for engines from Ferrari, Mercedes, and Renault. Depending on their agreement, they may not get upgrades as early as the factory team so they may not be running the same version of the engine as the prime team. That's one of the reasons teams seek out makers like Honda and are willing to suffer development years hoping to have an exclusive down the road.

Thanks for the replies, re. Team Haas. Makes sense; possibly different version of power unit, plus a variety of team-specific components => qualifying food chain. An example: I did read that Haas just switched from Brembo to Carbone brakes.

They were back to Brembos at the GP.
