Anyway, there is some phenomenon there that fools your ear and brain.

Mine is very vulnerable to this and I get fooled very easily. So listening for me is very important and I have to work very hard, especially when working out a song by ear.
To me it does not sound lower though it does imply a chord change to from F to Bb.

[size-2]Hi all

I love to listen. I need music in repeatable form (I can play over and over) so radio listening is out for me.

I listen the first time for pure enjoyment, but my brain is analytical when it comes to music, so I like to just put things on 'loop' and begin to absorb songs.

A lot of my learning and memorization comes out of extended listening sessions. It's particularly nice when we are on trips (we're retired and often go on 4-6 week jaunts) because I can just put the earbuds in as we drive about 300 miles a day (on the days we travel).

I've been doing it for over 40 years now.

Toby...

I also listen in the car. Now that I've finally got one with a CD player I can do like dk does and put a tune on repeat play.

Lj...

If I happen to hear something interesting in passing on the radio, I note the station and time so I can go on-line and find it on the playlist.

To all...

One of the great things about YouTube is that you can usually find multiple versions/performances of tunes and gain insight by "triangulation".
When I started out to play old-time fiddle I bought LP's that had Soldiers Joy.
I probably have 50 different versions in as many different styles.

This helps get beyond the notes to the essence...

Well I spend some time listening to notes from my Ear Master Pro software to try to improve my ear. That is a pretty focused exercise.
But it is also quite abstract.

So now I learn the melody off by heart from sheet music of songs I like to play and I find that is helping me to get under the hood of the song in question.

I have fairly bad vocal pitch control which I'm trying to address.

Paul...

It may sound trite, but try identifying with the solution instead of the problem.

But I am trying to address a solution. I find that by learning the melody from the sheet music I can imagine the notes as I try to sing them much better.

I am open to suggestions.....

I don't listen enough. In fact it's pretty rare I'll listen to anything intently. I have been trying to listen to more fingerstyle songs, and some sound great, but I'm not really analyzing. Just enjoying.

I'm resigned to the fact that I just don't have the time. I get 2hrs tops to myself a day. This is the only time I get for guitar, meditation, catching up on current events, and reading. Quite a squeeze.

Maybe in a few years when the little one is older.

Sounds like you have a life!

My guitar is my meditation. Saves time.
