Weird Sound in Amp All of a Sudden
Hi, I got a fender champion 20 to play with my fender MIM strat last month and today while I was practising I suddeny heard a sound for a couple of seconds as if steam letting off and after that every time I turn my amp on or off it keeps making a weird squeaky sound which lasts a few seconds. Please help.

Hi Iron Horse. Just to clarify, the sound only happens when you turn the amp on or off and it lasts a few seconds, correct? I'm guessing that would rule out the speaker.
Does it also make the sound if you have all the effects turned off? Basically, set the amp to a clean channel with no reverb/effects, turn it off and see if it still happens. |

That's all I have. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
What's the return policy on the amp? Many places have a 30 day return policy. After that you may have to deal with warranty. |

Yes the store guy told me when i got the amp that fender does not bother with repairs and they would just give me a replacement.

The downside of solid state/modeling amps right there (don't get me wrong, I enjoy my Mustang a lot) - when they go, they really go. So much complexity + PCB construction makes troubleshooting a real pain. Hope they replace it for you without a fuss.

Talk to the retailer today. Hopefully it's an easy swap and you don't have to go through Fender returns. Let us know how it works out.

If the sound you're describing is an upward-moving "weet" sound, Fender has had several amps that did this- mostly when powering down. The M80 series often did this. The problem usually had to do with the power supply. The authorized cure was to change the values on a few filters in the supply.
As many of these amps are moving to surface mount technology, some of the companies would rather exchange the boards than pay a tech to troubleshoot them. A computerized assembler can build a board in less time than we can get them out of the cabinet! Good Luck, Bill. |

Today I went to the store and they offered a replacement after talking with Fender which I did not take and bought Yamaha THR10C instead. Practised for 4 hours straight with it an cannot believe how amazing it sounds!

Yes, that little Yamaha amp is really nice. If I didnt already have the Roland BA I would get one of those.
