"But all my words come back to me, in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony, I need someone to comfort me"

Homeward Bound-Paul Simon

You stay here
And I'll go look for God
Not so hard
Cause I know where he's not
I will bring him back with me
Make him listen - make him see

You Stay Here- Richard Shindell

Broken hearts and dirty windows
make life difficult to see.

Steve Goodman/John Prine

(John Prine is generally credited for the song "Souvenirs", but I saw a special on John Prine on PBS a few years back, and in it, if my memory isn't all confused, John Prine said that Steve Goodman wrote the song and just gave it to him, saying, "here, it's yours")

Definitely a John Prine song but he dedicates it to Steve Goodman every time he sings it.

"I wrote that in my car. A 65 Chevelle. Driving to the Fifth Peg. Like the 5th or 6th time playing there. I used to play there just Thursdays after they hired me. They hired me from that open stage the very first time I sang for the crowd.

They invited me back a week later, and I did it again for an open stage. And that night the owner asked me if I wanted to sing once a week. I didn’t know I was auditioning. I didn’t know what to do, how long you’re supposed to sing or anything. So I went home and wrote a bunch of songs to fill in the time. They told me to do three sets of 45 minutes. So about the fifth time I was driving down there I thought, God, the same people are gonna be sitting there. I better have a new song. So I wrote “Souvenirs” in the car on the way down. And then I thought I’d come up with a melody. And I thought I had come up with a pretty sophisticated melody in my head, and I was surprised to find out it had the same three chords that all my other songs have. [Laughter] Really surprised. I thought I had written a jazz melody. "

And I turned 21 in prison doing life without parole. No one could steer me right but mama tried, mama tried.

Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk ...

Baby, baby, I get down on my knees for you. If you would only love me like you used to do, yeah.

Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes, I see them running too

This is a timely thread because I moved a lot of old CDs over to a travel case and have been listening to a few songs off of John Hiatt's Slow Turning. I've always liked the line, "I always thought our house was haunted cause nobody said boo to me." lol But probably my all-time favorite line...or really lines...are from David Wilcox's Burgundy Heart-Shaped Medallion. More than once, I've included them in emails or cards to friends who I knew were going through tough times.

"If I had a spell of magic
I would make this enchantment for you
A burgundy heart-shaped medallion
With a window that you could look through
So that when all the mirrors are angry
With your faults and all you must do
You could peek through that heart-shaped medallion
And see you from my point of view."

Too many great ones but here is one of my favorites.....

Ya know old trees just grow stronger,
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day.
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello.

- John Prine

All time best line I've ever heard comes from "Icy Blue Heart" -- a song full of good lines written by John Hiatt (as sung by Emmylou Harris). (The man in the song pays a woman a compliment beyond compare):

"He said, 'You are a beauty like I've never witnessed and I've seen the Northern Lights dance in the air.'"

Same song: "His beer was warmer than the look in her eye."
