Martin 000-28, a simple solution
After poking around and asking folks what they like the 000-28 by Martin seems like a good simple choice. There are variations like the EC,V,H and others but the basic seems good enough for me. It was that or a 00-18, but they are the same price basically used. Rosewood has this bass it seems to produce Im crazy about. Spruce top, ebony fretboard, what more do you need. It just seems this guitar worked so well for so many other musicians.
Dose anyone have any opinions on this guitar? Does the scolloped bracing of the higher end models make it sound that much better? For ripping off the pick guard (yes thats what Im going to do) and fingerpicking the snot out of it would this be a good choice? |

Scalloped bracing does dramatically change the tone. Straight braces have a much brighter/tighter sound. Scalloped braces lend more to bass response and a "whoofier" sound.
The 000-28 in all of its iterations is a fantastic guitar. The 000-28EC is one of my favorite modern production guitars. For a fingerpicker, or blues box you can't go wrong with it.

I concur with all the opinions you got while poking around. The 000-28 can be a fantastic guitar. Each one is somewhat different so play as many as you can and get a great one.

I have the 000-28 and love it. I've played the 000-28EC and thought it had a little more overall volume and a little more bass. Liked it a lot except for the Mod V neck.
You can't go wrong with any model of this line. |

Suppose so, but I've never met one that felt like I wanted to own it. Obviously, YMMV.
Are you fingerpicking with bare fingers or picks? I assume "fingerpicking the snot out of it" means you play aggressively? |

I love my 000-28ec. Big rich woody bass, crystalline highs....

Not sure . . . don't buy it.
Mine will last until I 'cop my clogs'. It's my go to guitar always. Greatest for finger picking, but still sounds good for flatpicking (although my D-28 is better in that area). Have fun looking.

Martin just updated the 000-28 along with all their other standard models. It now has scalloped bracing and slightly different neck (1.75" nut, performance taper) I would def check out a new one if possible. I think scalloped braces are a big improvement to tone on smaller bodied short scale guitars like the 000-28. That said if you found an 000-28 you really like then go for it!

Cool thanks folks. Yup just using the old fingers strumming, picking (just bare). Its amazing how much you can rough up a guitar with bare fingers and not hurt it, such a Brut.
Yea I went down to Boston to pick up an EC but couldnt deal with 1 3/4 nut. Yea so Martin is interesting as they keep changing their set ups around, new 000-28 looks nice, not liking the 1.75 nut, good it works for some just not me (one of my digits dont work). The thing is with some checking and other blemishes I can pick up a 000-28 on Reverb for 1500 bucks. Its really the 000-28H (with scalloped bracing) I wanted but there just as much as an EC. |
