Taylor k22
I'm looking for a small body 12 fret and had my heart set on a 0-28vs or 00-28vs until I saw the Taylor 522 and found out there was a Koa k22 version. These seem nice but I can't get ahold of a k22 to play. I really don't have experience playing an all-koa guitar... Anyone have an opinion on this one?

I've not played a K-22. But I have owned an all-koa guitar (Tacoma) and am a big fan of the x12/x22 body style. I tend to like bigger guitars, but Taylor really hit the spot with its grand concerts -- especially the 12-fretters. They sound bigger than you would expect, and they are a joy to play. I'm not a pure fingerstyle guy, but for a hybrid pick/finger player, at least, they seem perfect.
As for koa, the first koa guitar I ever played was a Taylor and they do great things with the wood. But it is a love-it-or-hate-it tonewood. You get a nice strong bass and brilliant trebles. It's kind of like maple in that way. I love maple, but koa has something "more" in the midrage and overall sparkle -- especially with a koa top. I've owned an all-mahogany guitar and played all-mahogany and all-koa guitars and they are not real similar, tonally -- even accounting for the radically different body styles I owned. Some people say if you're not crazy about your koa guitar, "Wait." But life is short. I would find some way to play something by a good builder with a koa top, at least, and see if you like the tonewood. If so, you should feel reasonably comfortable trusting Taylor to deliver a great guitar for you with the K-22. |
