Default Progressive Insurance - Pros or Cons?

I had quite a tiff with my current insurance company yesterday and got a great quote from Progressive. Seems that every 3 years or so you need to jump ship to get a decent rate, ala the cable company.

Anyone have any good or bad to tell about Progressive?

I had them long ago when GEICO had temporarily dropped me for a collision/comprehensive & break-in claim in the same year. At the time, they were GEICO's "farm team," one step up from the non-standard companies of last resort. Never had to use them. No problems, ever. Premiums were cheaper than GEICO. GEICO took me back when Progressive spun off to become its own company (and their premium was by then a tad higher than GEICO's).

I haven't had an accident/claim/ticket in well over 15 years. My current company is playing the "let's see where his breaking point is" game.

Quote from Progressive was over almost 30% cheaper.

Just don't want to "get what I pay for" if that's the case.

Progressive has indeed grown up and become a "real" insurance company. Were I not happy with GEICO I might have considered them.

Todd,

We had Liberty Mutual for 17 years till 18 days ago. We received a renewal notice in May with a 43% increase on our premium. They claimed that the state of Florida is among the worst for insurance fraud which is why the rate increase was so high. I felt like doing a YouTube Video with the Statue of Liberty photo in the background which will disappear during with my voiceover reviewing the rate increase during a side by side policy review and emphasizing as she disappears that Liberty Mutual does not stand with you.

As part of the search for a new auto insurance provider both Geico and Progressive quoted the identical new renewal rates as Liberty Mutual on a six month policy, which I thought was odd. At least Liberty's policy with a 43% increase was for a one year renewal.

I was told by friends that both Geico and Progressive, "get you" when you renew after six months. We have no idea if this is true, only what a friend told us. I reached out to AMICA, based in RI, and they were outstanding to work with and provided us better coverage at only $90 higher from what we had been paying for the last year to Liberty Mutual. Good luck with your renewal. You need to keep that new Honda protected!

USAA.

Progressive has some fun commercials and good for Stephaine Courtney to have kept that gig going for so long; but there are some things I personally don't like about the company and won't do business with them.

i won't even consider them based upon their idiot commercials. try your local people.

how is it that all the homeowner/car insurance companies can save everyone $460 or more? doesn't anyone do due diligence? (do due-can i say that?)

play music!

It has always seemed odd to me that we would be penalized for using a product we pay for. Imagine if, by the third time you turned on your TV, you started getting billed for doing so, and soon after, your TV was shut off so you could no longer use it. Then, you find a company who will "forgive" you for using your TV and let you use it a few extra times before shutting it off for good.

Con: Progressive is not Geico.
Customer since 2001 Geico has paid several major claims no problemo.
Laid a motorcycle down at McDonalds, bent frame etc. 5K+
Hit by a kid fleeing the police. 4K+
Laid my chopper down in the garage and engaged the rear wheel with a chain through it. 2K
If my trucks blown engine hadn't been covered by a waning warranty my mechanical breakdown insurance would have covered a 14K+ replacement with a $250 deductible.

Good luck!

I guess it depends on what type of insurance you're asking about.
