Great looking instruments. I really appreciate orange coloration in tonewood, whether it's a bit of orange shading in BRW or Cuban mahogany, or lots of orange like the Pernambuco. I'd sure like to hear one of your Pernambuco guitars; any chance one lives in the Midwest?

After a bit of confusion re the ideal arrival moment, I finally did ship the Pernambuco OM today.

The JB-L00 has got almost all its finish on, just one or possibly two coats to go. I am trying a new (to me) finish on this one after being settled on my ACE varnish for nearly ten years now. This new finish, Murdoch's, is considerably harder, and while it will surely be a boon to those with less than stellar ability to "handle with care" (myself, for instance), I am worrying about the sound, particularly where sensitively is concerned. This stuff is bound to add some structure, while decreasing damping. It will be interesting when stringing time comes.

Meanwhile, I have started a new guitar. This one has been customer ordered directly to me, but is a Schoenberg Soloist. Pretty easy money for Eric who had to do nothing but say "Yes!". His Soloist model is another way of saying OM. In this case no cutaway, and made with Italian spruce over Koa. I have a picture of the top for you today, but just WAIT till you see the Koa.

ES-15: Rosette is in and the top is to the thickness that seems right.

Well, Bruce got started on this Schoenberg and it's doubly exciting because he's building it for me. Folks who know me know I'm an OM nut and at this point I have some amazingly stellar examples of the breed (if I do say so myself). I have 2 pre-war Martin OM/000s, modern Martins, and OMs by Kim Walker, TJ Thompson, Schoenberg(1993) and more. Bruce was an easy choice for an OM because of his incredible experience with the pre-war Martin OM model--I understand he's built 70 of them! I'm incredibly excited to have his take on the traditional Orchestra Model, and the Italian spruce from Rivolta and the mind-blowing koa (which you'll see soon) will make an amazing guitar.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!! As his next guitar, Bruce will build me another new guitar (a JB-15) that is about as untraditional as one can get. All asymetrical, his cool cutaway, a bit of a wedge, fan fret, etc, etc, so I will have the two poles of what Bruce has worked so hard to achieve in his luthiery career.

So keep your eyes on this traditional koa/italian Schoenberg and then look out for something completely different.

So sorry for monopolizing your late winter/early spring, Bruce! Tim

I’m gonna have to work pretty hard not to crack a smile as I search my heart for forgiveness, Tim.

Some of my customers prefer anonymity and I strive to give it to them, but it looks like the cats out of the closet here. Thank you for a very nice post.

I suppose I could be a bit intimidated by the “competition” this guitar will have when it is delivered. It would be a total vanity to expect it to be dominant, but I do expect it will hold its head above water at the least. Now the next one . . . It should be an example of what I consider the state of the art.

Here's a glimpse of the Koa sides behind the first tier of top braces, still rough:

That is some sharp Koa. It seems very dark.

The Koa is dark, but not as much as the photo looks. More like the second of these two:

Jmat: your finish is hardening nicely, and you ought to have your L00 in under 3 weeks.

I think most will be surprised at the degree of figure in this Koa. For my taste, I have never seen any better. But the main asset of this set is the density, which is very high, for Koa. I have great expectations for this instrument.
