What do you put 80/20's on?
It's been years, maybe even a decade since I've bought 80/20's. I didn't care for them back then, but thought that maybe I should give them another shot. Tastes change. I have different guitars today than I did back then. Who knows I might like them on one of my current ones. Maybe even prefer them.
The question I have for the AGF community: for those out there that really like 80/20's, which guitar (make/model/woods) are you using them on? I know that I should try them for myself and I will. However, just wanted to know what others like 'me on. |

I put them on my wife's Larrivee OM-03.
It's win/win. She's happy because I changed her guitar strings, I'm happy because I found something to do with several sets of 80/20's a bought on accident.

I recently started with them on a D18 GE and really like them. Can’t really describe the diffence other than to say maybe a bit more smoky than the EJ 17’s I was using prior.

I don't own or have ever heard a guitar that made me think it would sound better with 80/20's but like you, I decided to try them again after reading comments here on the AGF.
Guess what, I was right first time. I'm going to try them on my Honda UMS425U.

I like Elixir strings. I use Nano PB lights on my 814c to tame the brightness. Works well for me. On darker guitars, I use 80/20s to brighten them up a bit. That seems to work well too.

They come standard on a lot of Gibsons, but they're the first thing I change. I just find them to be too strident and too bright.

Since I test many sets of strings on each new guitar, whatever they sound best on. No predetermined formula. You just have to try them and keep them if you like them.

I think they balance well on my warm sounding guitar. PB's are too warm and mushy on it for me. For some people the mushiness may be thought of as complexity but my guitar has enough going on in resonance by itself without more going on. It sounds ok with dead strings even,

I just put a set of D'Addario 80/20 lights on my Gibson. To me they don't sound that bright at all. PB's are bright to me as well as Elixers.

I use 80-20s on all my guitars and always have done. I experimented with PB strings occasionally but always revert to 80-20.

I remember when Phos bronze strings were the newest thing. Tried them and found them audibly better. Still believe so on any guitar. Just my own personal taste, I guess. I have tried going back to 80-20s and couldn't wait to switch back.

A couple of years ago I would would have said Phospher bronze for all my guitars (Elixirs).
Now, I put 80/20s on my HD-28. I find that it adds clarity to the low end. Still on the fence about 80/20s on my D-18. My Furch guitars sound fantastic with Phosphor Bronze.

I don't own any guitars that are too dark for my taste, so I don't enjoy them.
