Who's a lucky boy then?

Excellent example of craftsmanship and guitar building - you must be thrilled. Would love to hear it.........

Default It's been awhile!

Sorry for not update the thread for quite awhile...seems like I had a little too much fun traveling around after handed in my dissertation Well, my mod-d had been sent back to Julian a few weeks ago and the strings were on, the only thing left to do now is the final set up, I literally can't wait to pick it up next week at Julian's place.

Since I'll pick up the guitar personally, I asked Julian not to send any final pics(wonder why I did this to myself)...the suspense is over the top. To make things better, or worse...I got to hear the first few notes when Julian put the strings on...this guitar really is a cannon! I'll have better idea after I get to put some time on it.

For those who are going to attend the Woodstock show, Julian and I will be there with this mod-d and another one(sitka/sapele), I'd love to meet all of you so please come say hi, and of course...play with those beauties if you want to! While I don't have any pics of my guitar, here are some photos from the sapele one, enjoy!

Wow! Absolutely beautiful, and stunning craftsmanship.

Any thoughts on the tonal differences between quilted sapele and fiddleback mahogany in a Mod D build. Pretty sure Julian's built them with both - perhaps he might be able to chime in? I ask because I've got a kinda special MD build coming up with another former Somogyi apprentice, a certain Mr Sands, and these are currently my front-running wood choices...

First of all, thanks! I think both guitars turned out nicely.

I'm inclined to say that mahogany tends to be warmer sounding then Sapele. This particular guitar has a brilliance in the trebles and bass that was a little unexpected but a happy addition to the sound. The plain and figured mahogany guitars I've built have all had that characteristic warm mahogany sound. This is my first in Sapele, so I think I'll have to build more before I can speak with confidence.

I think Tom has some experience in this department too, what is his thinking?

Many thanks Julian - appreciate your taking the time to come back to me on this.

It's for a baritone MD (perhaps the first Somogyi/Somogyi apprentice baritone...?). My instinct was (and I think probably still is) toward the fiddleback hog (sister set to one of your builds, I gather), although the looks of the quilted sapele are also killer! I'll of course discuss it with Tom too, but it's helpful to have multiple the benefit of multiple opinions!
