I've always used a pc. No better or worse than any Mac systems, much less expensive, and no compatibility issues with any of my recording programs from Windows 95 through XP.

Cheapest option: build your own computer and install Linux. Pick out a quiet power supply, fans and drives.

You don't have the same hardware support but you can for example get linux drivers for several RME interfaces (and a Linux version of RME's Totalmix ).

The Ardour DAW is a serious piece of audio software.
