Me again...

Why not take a look at my website and let me have your comments.

I'm learning this web stuff by using my old bands material. I'm the one playing the Black Ovation. Don't laff!

Anything by Mark Hanson is an excellent reference.

He seems to catch a load of cynical flack on other threads, but up-and-comer John Mayer is one to watch for his unique fingerstlye approach...he uses his pinkie in many of his songs....just my two and sixpence....

Mayer's also a master at his thumb. He picks with it like crazy.

I'm a Mayer freak, and I seem to be learning all my new tricks through him lately. He's making major progress, so I always have plenty to work on, too.

if the strings are 1-2-3-4-5-6 from the low e to the high e

and thumb and fingers 1-2-3-//index/middle/ring

the rhythm is two/one-two-one-two-one two-///two/one-two-one-two-one two

using a g chord first position-3/2/o/o/o/3

thumb and Ring finger on strings 1 and 6 ( this is two)

then thumbon 3 (one/two)
index on4

thumb on 2 (one/two)
middle on 5

thumb on 3 index on 4(one-two)

and repeat with the thumb and ring finger on strings 1 and 6

pluck the two then pick the next two sets--

Does this make sense to you??

he's trying to say how he does it in his head but I think that explanation only makes sense if you've seen him do it before.

if it's the same way I think then first pick both top and bottom of the chord. for a 6-string chord then alternate inward going 5th, 2nd, 4th, 3rd string. all 5-note chords receive your choice of alternation on the inner note combinatinos with one repeat being a necessity.

it's fun to learn classical guitar songs for the way they fingerpick. we've talked about it a few times I think the poll indicated most people doi t with two fingers, their thumb and index, but if you're dedicated you might end up like leo kottke or insert equivalent...

bass players I know work on that same triplet figure use three fingers it's GREAT think of your guitar as a bass and go from there

If you are into blues you might want to check out a book that comes with a cd called Beginning Fingerstyle guitar. I think it is a good step by step book. However, you certainly can't go wrong with anything Mark Hanson has done either.

Out of curiosity, how many of you fingerpickers use your fingernails, and how many of you just use your fingertips? I mostly play with a pick, but occasionally I fingerpick, and because I don't grow out my nails, I just use the tips of my fingers. This gives my sound a really cool tone, because I get tons of bass response, and no high frequency pick noise. I would think that fingernails would just get in my way, and I would have to spend too much time and effort to keep them the right length, etc. I have also played a lot of fretless bass through the years, so that might have something to do with it.

I hit the string first with my fingertip, but it immediately hits my nail and sounds off of that. My nails seem to break less frequently when I play this way (as opposed to having the string hit my nail only).

Fingertips only. No nails at all. I don't want to grow out my nails, so I have resigned myself to learning with my fingertips.

My fingernails are just over the ends of my fingers. However, I hit the sting with the finger first and then get the nail.
