I'm practicing using a I, vi, IV, V chord sequence in all the CAGED keys. This gives me a bit of practice with some common barre chords. For some reason the barre B really kicks my posterior more than the F did. Pass on my sympathy to your friend. I feel his/her pain!

Many discussions on this topic here. I found that after a year of playing a new guitar I needed a set-up badly. Still a hard chord.

1) Guitar setup
2) Practice A lot of beginner guitarists I have spoken to look at me funny when I mention them getting their guitars setup properly. It can make a massive difference.

I've been playing that F barre chord for forty years, and I still flub it probabaly 10 percent of the time. And I use both the barre and the four string index finger on first and second strings chords.
