Back braced...
A whopping amount of radius at 18" wide with a 10' radius! |

Top all braced...laminated red spruce/Coco and a Maple UTB. Spruce bridge patch with an ebony ball end cap.
That's about all for a few days as I have to work on some mandolins and make the moulds for this beast. |

I do like your SUPER JUMBO .. love to give her a spin .. That bracing sure looks thin ..tho I'm sure the sound will be fat and full .. How thin is your sruce/carbon fiber sandwich ?

Rollie, the dark center of the braces is Cocobolo. I don't use CF laminates on bracing. The only place I use it is the CF "tone tubes". I use rosewood, African Blackwood, ebony, any hard, ringing scrap back and side wood that I have. The sandwich is in the .250" range, and the bracing is tall and very triangular. I'm sure the length of the braces just makes them look very thin too, and most folks are used to spruce bracing which is necessarily a lot thicker.
The top is thicker than I would usually make a GC size guitar also... |

Here's a few photos of the mould building. Five 1/2" squares of Baltic birch are glued together, cut in half and double stacked. The cut is made with a brand new 3/16" 10T blade, then it's carefully sanded before joining with a couple of screw on plates.
The inside waste will be used to make the spreaders... |

Johann,
What a fantastic project. I take it these are all new molds for this beastie?! I see this is a 6-string. Any thoughts on a 12er? I'm only aware of Richard Clark building an 18" jumbo 12-string in recent memory. Coincidentally, that was also cocobolo. That build was tracked on the UMGF, here: http://theunofficialmartinguitarforu...com/topic/3273 Best wishes!! See you around the boards. - Charlie

Haans,
This thing is a beauty. I can't look at this thread without 'Fat Bottom Girls' going through my head, over and over. Can't wait to see it done. Chris. |

Thanks Joe! I don't have a wide lap, but Dakota Dave Hull does, and I'm sure he will want to try it out. He suggested it.
Chaz, I've looked at this beast more than once and thought 12 string. Who know...maybe in a year or so. I'd like to build a Holtzapfel though. On the other hand, my GC 12's are nice and compact and the sound on the long scale tuned to B IS Dave Ray, so I'm pretty satisfied. Chris, not familiar with FBG, but Dave Ray's "Keep your hands off her" (taken from Leadbelly) just runs through my head..."She's a big, wide momma, she got big fine legs...keep your hands off her, you hear what I say, boys she don't belong to you." |

Thanks Chaz. I've got a GC6 coming up with red/IRW and the dot and dash purfling that is really pretty.
Anyway, the box is done on this one except for final sanding and dovetail. On to the neck... Note the large radius on top and back... |
