Try taking your guitar in for a setup. A guitar with a good setup will take minimal effort to play cleanly. And then practice like hell.

I agree, a properly set up guitar for me, is much nicer and easier to play, What if they like the action high with heavy strings ? Technique and practice made the most difference for me.
