For me it would be to treat my childhood sweetheart better than I did. We are still married after forty five years. Not that I was that bad but I could have been better. She always has been the biggest blessing in my life.

I would tell my younger self to get a blood test for TSH. Lots of folks walking around with thyroid problems who don't know it. Would've changed my life dramatically.

Do you know what your TSH number is?

Guitar-wise I would tell my younger self to give up the pick earlier than I did.

So you are 22. Become a prison guard. In my state, retire full pension after 25 yrs. So at age 47, you will never have to work again.

On the afternoon of July 7, 1980, don't take the motorcycle to go to work, wait another 15 minutes and take the car.

Guitar wise: find someone much better than yourself and commit to study and practice. Great teachers are worth their weight in gold.

Life wise: live within your means. Stay out of debt and save, save, save. Oh, and don't start a family until you are financially secure enough to do so.

I wish I had someone to give me this advice when I was younger.

Purchase property and never sell it.

Problem is, I wouldn't listen to myself. Never did much like listening because I knew everything. If I could go back, I would do it in a Delorean.

Advice is only good for the future, not a big fan of impossible "what ifs....."

But to answer the question, I would have seriously put time into learning classical guitar. Advice for all our younger players, learn theory, it opens all the doors.

At 67, I consider my musical journey and the instruments I've been fortunate to own, beyond my youthful expectations, no complaints.....

I think this is really applicable to everything you might want to do, in regards to vocation, hobbies, spiritual development, investing, mental health, relationship skills, etc, etc, etc. Find people who are much better than you, learn from them, and commit to ongoing study and consistent practice. In retrospect, this is why I succeeded professionally, why I enjoy pretty good physical health, how I learned to be a much better husband than I was 20 or 30 years ago, how I have been able to experience financial sufficiency, and why I have been pretty contented (and feel profoundly grateful) in my 50's and 60's.

The advice about ear protection is VERY good, as well... When you take so much pleasure in music, it makes sense to protect your ability to have such enjoyment into your later years.

Default What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self if you Could Time Travel?

Pretty much the same advice I gave my students for over 30 years, gleaned from a variety of literary/philosophical sources, to prepare them for the future:
  • Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom - and with all your getting get understanding.
  • The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary - nobody owes you a living.
  • Choose your enemies as carefully as you choose your friends - and pray for the wisdom to know the difference.
  • If you do something you truly love, you'll never have to work a day in your life - follow your dream.
  • This above all: to thine own self be true - let no one squeeze you into their mold.
  • A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows the public opinion - don't be a lemming.
  • Better a crust of bread with honor than a feast at the devil's table - neither compromise nor deny your beliefs for the sake of friendship, expediency, or immediate gain.
  • "Tolerance" is a two-way street, and "equality" means the same thing in real life as it does in mathematics - the corollary to the three preceding proverbs.
  • A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in - plan for your legacy.
  • When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced; live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice - be a person of integrity.
