Default Cattle Drive past my Driveway on US Highway

I thought this might be something a bit different for many.
Happens twice a year spring and fall. here. I shot this video and snapped some photos this morning about 7:30
Local rancher has to drive cattle down US Highway that is the only route running south in and out of Jackson Hole Wy.

This was actually the second time they had come buy with a couple hundred head. They had driven them about 300 400 yards down the road (to right ) when two calves and a cow whirled around and ran back which started a breakaway and at least 1/2 the herd ran to about where you see them in the video before the ranchers finely got them turned back and headed the right direction

On my way home one evening down a long stretch of Farm-to-Market road here in East Texas I came upon a man on a 4-wheeler trying to get a handful of cows back in the pasture. A small section of fence was down. I was in a 2005 Ford Focus. I waved and took up a position to keep them from being able to turn away from him. Together we managed to drive them back into the pasture.

That was my one experience with herding cows. The pics and video are cool. Must have backed up traffic though.

Yes you can see the amount of traffic that was backed up . When everything goes well and they keep moving in the intended direction traffic can slowly move through

Seems unnecessarily hazardous to do this so close to (previously) moving traffic. Although I'm sure it provided a bit of spectatorship.

Unfortunately there is no other option for the rancher to get his cattle to his grazing permit area. There flag vehicles (not shown) in front and at the rear waving red flags, to warn and slow the traffic. It is probably less dangerous for the cows , then for me when I ride my bicycle on this same highway with the traffic (sparse as it is ) going 65 mph

Yeah, dodging pies at that speed makes for an unplanned risky slalom course.

How far do they have to move the cattle? We have trucks here capable of moving approx 1000 head at a time.

Living in our state's only county without a stoplight this is the closest we ever get to a traffic jam.

That's great! I wish I still lived where livestock would mosey on past once in a while.
Lately if I want to see any I have to drive quite a bit .
Thanks for sharing

Default herd instinct

I always help out when someone's livestock is loose. I am just so glad it is not my own!
