Default No more requests of "paypal gift" on another guitar forum

Title says it all. Another guitar forum is banning the gift option. Warning first time, suspension the next. Suspension if you bring it up after contacting a potential buyer.

Thoughts?

Fine with me. As a seller or buyer using Paypal I prefer the additional protections afforded that are eliminated when using the friends/family option.

I am always shocked that any buyer would ever agree to do this. Think about it...You are sending money to someone, and saying that money is NOT for a transaction. What happens if the seller just deletes the ad, and goes away?

Moreover, of course, it's just not the aboveboard way to do things.

When I see this in an ad, I never even consider the guitar.

I will accept a gift as a seller but never, ever ask for it. I will never use gift as a buyer.

I'd call it "appropriate".

Even though I am not a fan of PayPal, I still don't think it is upright to steal from them (and if you use their service to accept payment for an item you are seeing without paying the fee that they charge, you are a thief). I know people can (and have) come up with countless justifications and mincing of the words of the PayPal agreement, but it is really a pretty straightforward issue, ethically speaking.

I agree. Use the service, pay the price.

However, the last time I sold a guitar via e-bay, paid by Paypal, then inspected and collected, Paypal "pended" the payment for an unspecified period

I rang them (seems all enquiries go to somewhere strange in the USA where sentence construction and grammar are different to the rest of the English speaking world) and asked them why.

They said (I think) that it was in case the buyer changed his mind or found a fault!?)
This irritated me.

Anyway they released it after a few weeks.

It is impossible to sell an item on eBay unless you "agree" to accept PayPal but I write that I don't - I'd much rather have cash, or preferable a direct online transfer from buyer's account to mine. Simple , easy, and safe.

"FROM" Andy, it's "different from", you cannot be different "TO" something.

I suppose it's marginally less offensive to my fine sensibilities than the appalling "different than".

I need a drink now.

That's good news. I agree with it from both a seller and buyer perspective.

What SM said +1. Personally, I like PayPal a lot. I do a lot of internet transactions and don't like it when a vendor doesn't take PP.

I think you need to use some common sense in a transaction like this. If the seller can verify his trustworthiness then I don't see a problem. It's a way around getting gouged, and some may deem it as dishonest but it's not like we're trying to rip off start up businesses....we're talking about the Paypal/Ebay monster here. I've done this before and I can point buyers to my rating on however many other sites they would like. It's a way to offer lower prices on forums and have both parties make out a little better.
