I guess the revival of this old thread is as good a time as any to update my first post on it (which was less than impressed with one I tried to play at a music teachers conference). I have joined the ranks of happy Eastman owners. I don't play a lot of mandolin as the area that I'm in has a ton of mandolin pickers, but last year I had a couple of orchestra gigs that required mandolin. I was looking at bare-bones solid A models and was going back and forth between Kentucky, Loar, and Eastman. I happened to be shopping for school instruments when I found an Eastman 305 for just under $250. It had a well-repaired side crack and a ding in the top. I snatched it up and it has been serving me well. Well done, Eastman.

Ive had my 805V for quiet a few years now, no complaints. The only other mando Ive played that was noticeably better than it was a Collings MT... but that's a lot more dollars of course. Being primarily a guitar player that dabbles in mando I don't see myself looking for anything else.
Cheers, Scott.

I've been impressed by the MD 315s I've played recently. I've felt that you don't get that much more tone in the higher level Eastmans, just fancy stuff. Same with Kentuckys up to the 900. Then Kentuckys get pretty good.
So if I weren't going to spend a chunk, like $1200, I'd get a 315. For $900 you can pick up a used KM 900, a big sonic upgrade. But for $1200 used, you can get a real nice A style. Be patient and a Weber, Summitt, Silverangel, Ratliff or some such A style will come along to make you very happy,
