Thanks for pointing that out, it's way more up my alley.

That said, was rather surprised not to see Lindsay Buckingham on there... Maybe they didn't consider Fleetwood Mac to be "rock".

That list on the right ("The Best Rock Guitarists on Acoustic") is ridiculous, as well. I don't see Eric Clapton in the first 25, and his performance on "Unplugged" pretty much started the whole rock-guitarist-as-acoustic-hero genre.

The best (or worst) of anything list(s) is subjective. Who makes up these lists? What are their (subjective) qualifications? What are the criteria for their rankings? And how are these criteria and rankings accessed and applied?

There's always someone left out. Maybe we need to make our own list!

I'm surprised Lenny Breau was not mentioned,
Chet Atkins was very impressed with Lenny and called him a genius.

I enjoy seeing these lists. Sure, I can quibble with who is on the list as well as the relative rankings. More importantly, this list makes me realize I need to do more listening. I have never heard (recording or live) 26 of the guitarists listed. That's a bit embarrassing.

You can write and perform some of the most iconic acoustic guitar songs of the 60's and 70's, sell 35 million records, get into the RRHOF with two different groups, have Martin fall all over themselves to make models with your name on them......and stills not make the list.

Also, no Clarence White - preposterous!

Should be noted it is a 100 best (As a group) list..... (debatable enough by itself)
But no where on that link does it indicate it is a a ranking order "in numerical order of rating " List.

just sayin'

Yes, I tried to say that earlier...maybe I was too obscure in my wording.

Also, in regards to Clarence White/Bruce Cockburn/Toby Walker, et al, "fingerstyle", and acoustic guitar primarily. Not Bluegrass/flatpicking, not a major singer-songwriter, not Blues, etc.

It's just a list, and the parameters are well defined...

No you were clear, I was just repeating in different wording because "rank" continued to come up

and your while your '" lists are lists" is spot on.... But none the less congrats

Looked familiar.

That very same link has already been poster here at AGF, in a thread from 09-09-2016 over at Another Top-100 (Acoustic) list...

About the criteria used to evaluate the Top 100: Note that while "Pioneers of Blues" are excluded, that doesn't mean that all Acoustic Blues folks must be ignored--Kenny Sultan, for example, a king of the Acoustic Blues genre, makes the list at #99.

From that linked web page:

"Criteria: This list is intended for those musicians whose primary instrument throughout their careers has been or is now the acoustic guitar. It is based upon their individual originality, innovation, technique & influence within this genre. It does NOT include the Pioneers of Blues, Jazz, Classical, or the Latin acoustic influenced genre's such as Flamenco, or those modern guitarists who have recorded or performed their music in an occaisonal "unplugged" setting.

I am not disagreeing with you, just clipping your quote of the criteria, because I still don't see how Clarence White gets left off of a list of acoustic guitarists that is based on "their individuality, innovation, technique & influence..." This is someone who almost singlehanded created the flatpicking guitar solo in a bluegrass band context.

Hmm. It reminded me of the Rolling Stone "greatest guitarist" list, more than a bit biased.

Oh, it's a list of the 100 Greatest acoustic guitar players by narrow definitions instead of a list of the 100 greatest acoustic guitar players by ability. So sorry, my bad, not interested in that topic. Have at it.
